If Uber’s rates are so low, why haven’t most drivers quit the app already? I am assuming Uber isn’t the sole way to get around in Kenya and hasn’t a monopoly in any way. Most developing countries have an informal network of drivers who criss cross the city and basically form an essential pillar of transport there.

Drivers still need to find a way to connect with clients that need a ride, and thats where Uber shines. Existing as an independent taxi where you just drive around and hope you find someone to hail you doesn’t really work.

Before Uber, it was independent taxis only that worked. Sure it was less seamless, but it was a system. Even today, many countries have very low Uber penetration and taxis still run solely in the old fashioned way.

Of course they can still likely run fine, but uber does make things more efficient and generally reduces non-fare idle time, which means less wasted money for drivers. It’s reasonable to expect them to keep using the app to get riders when they can, even if they’re going to try and charge on-top to cover their expenses.

            reasonable

I don’t think you know what that word means, and I am saying that as someone who is strongly anti-uber

These apps already charge all kinds of fees on top of the posted price so it’s not weird for the driver to do the same.

What? Unless Kenya works differently than most of the world, then no, they don’t. The fact that customer knows final price before the ride was one of the main selling points of the app.

Also, pretty sure that’s illegal (which might not be such dealbreaker in Kenya, I am not really familiar with local situation).

Sounds like Uber just needs to let the drivers set their own rates.

You know, like an independent contractor does. Because that’s what they’ve been saying drivers are already (in the US, at least).
