The planned regulation, first reported by Reuters, would also force American and other major automakers in the coming years to remove key Chinese software and hardware from vehicles in the United States

So we make vehicles now that are so dependant on software that state actors can basically take them over and control them at will, and the US thinks it’s only a problem when China does it?

Why not simply mandate that cars sold in the US don’t have any of that shit to begin with?

Because, quite frankly, there is no place for inefficient vehicles, and without ecus/other electronic controls ICE vehicles are basically unable to compete

There’s a whole range of possibilities between having an ECU and constantly uploading video, listening to conversations, and recording location history.

Anybody remember that video of a guy walking into his garage naked? And getting passed around the Tesla Office?

They record even when they’re not being driven.

Protectionism will surely solve this crisis. I have a dream that every man woman and child has there own 3 ton vehicle with a front grill so high it could run down a basketball player with ease.

You probably haven’t heard about it, but the EPA is next on John Roberts’ SCOTUS-smashing smorgasbord.

My only hope is to live long enough to see the look on billionaire’s faces when they realize it’s too damn hot and dusty for their private jets to take off or leave orbit

They still haven’t learnt the lessons from the '80s.
Why import restrictions on Japanese cars (even with the cooperation of the Japanese government) didn’t work in the '80s:
