  • Been running Manjaro for years. Don’t really know what would make me change.

I guess maybe if I suddenly started getting more and more dependency errors when upgrading packages from the AUR it would make me consider jumping to put Arch.

But right not that’s not the case. So the benefit of switching is out weighed by the pain in the ass of having to say Everything up again.

  • Advertising isn’t the problem. And before I get my balls cut off, I’ll back away slowly while explaining myself…

We’ve always paid for ads. Back in the old days you paid for a cable subscription and got to watch ads every 15 minutes. That’s not a new phenomenon. Hell, television was designed around the advertising break. The entire one hour series 5 part script model was created with the “cut to ad break” in mind. You think about your CSI:Miami “sunglasses of justice” stinger, or your fourth ad-break plot-twist as the Romulan war bird uncloaks and the music dun-dun-duns into a commercial for cheese-its…

That’s not a problem in and of itself. In fact I kind of miss it when shows were written that way. Heck, Tubi and Pluto TV do it and no one complains about that. And if Netflix wants to add those back into their free tier, more power to 'em.

But advertising is not about getting served a few commercials every fifteen minutes anymore. It’s literally in front of the content, within the content, etc… It’s not about “hey look, it’s an ad break, let’s go refill our 7-up and take a piss”, it’s inlaid with the content, as well as taking up as much, if not MORE time than the actual content itself. and THAT’S part one of the problem.

Part two is the fact that if you’re going to make more money by making me pay for your service AND watch advertisements, you better damn well be giving at least some of that new money to other creatives that are MAKING those advertisements. Make a commercial with actors and actresses; pay them. Hire a writer to create ad-copy, just like we used to do. But if you’re going to charge me AND make me watch lazy shit you made with A.I. slop, than THAT is where I’ll happily take my ship and head onto the high seas.

I’d be perfectly happy to sit through two or three traditional advertisements every fifteen minutes just like we did in the old days. But what I WON’T stand for is watching five minutes of lazy A.I. ads after every five minutes of actual content and be expected to PAY for the service on top of that.

  • Supporting ActivityPub doesn’t excuse being owned and operated by META.

Will Bsky eventually shit itself like Twitter did? Sure, maybe. That seems to be the normal path nowadays. And when it does, I’ve still got my Masto account that I try to keep active as well. But at the very least, Bsky is a different company. I can have a bsky account without being dragged into an entire META ecosystem designed to put their chosen content in front of my eyes.

Even at it’s worst, the fact that Bsky is it’s own thing and not owned by a mega corporation puts it automatically about Threads, regardless of ActivityPub.

  • Similar to you, but I can’t remember if it was a potato.

Like others, ive had things go down the wrong pipe before; everyone has. But this time it was completely blocked; no air in or out.

I live alone, so it was the scariest moment of my life. By the time I was able to dislodge it enough to breath by slamming my diaphragm down against the edge of a counter enough times, my eyesight had already begun to go dark.

Thought for sure that that was it for me right there.

  • Didn’t say anything about auto-updating. Just can’t be bleeding edge and use proprietary drivers, that’s all. Other (AMD) use the open source drivers, so they don’t have that issue. And that’s great. But if you use the NVIDIA propietary drivers, you can’t race ahead of them.

That doesn’t make the drivers bad; they work perfectly fine; and have far far far better performance than AMD. There’s just the trade-off that you can’t be bleeding edge when using them.

You take the good you take the bad you take them both and there you have…the facts of life.

You’re argument that drivers are bad because you can’t fuck around with your system without them breaking is disingenuous. If you buy a brand new Wacom tablet, and it turns out that it’s too new and the Kernel doesn’t support it yet, or no one has written a patch to get it working, you don’t claim that Wacom is a shit company. It’s just a fact of life that you have to wait for either the kernel to update or for someone to get a patch working.

But when it comes to NVIDIA…holy shit… WORST, period, COMPANY, period, EVER!!! And that’s just hypocritical.

  • The point isn’t to get Trump into the Whitehouse; it’s to get Vance into the whitehouse.

Trump will legitimately kick the bucket within the next four years, guaranteed. And Vance will be the one to take his place. Vance will be the one who is suddenly an “incumbant” backed by the heritage foundation who is actually reasonably well spoken, able to debate, far smarter than Trump, and younger.

Vance wasn’t “chosen” by Trump, he came as a part of the deal with the Heritage Foundation to get him elected.

  • Trump’s followers are not sophisticated, politically savvy people. They’re attracted to Trump because he’s a bully. He (was) everything that they wish they were because at their heart they just want to laugh at others misfortune and he gives them that.

But think back to highschool. What happens when someone finally pulls down the pants of the bully; humiliates him in a crowd of people? That’s right. His followers, that group of laughing Hyenas that follow him around, start to ditch.

Policy doesn’t change a trump voter. Ethics doesn’t change a trump voter. The only thing that changes a trump voter is showing them that their following a loser and a sucker.
