Would be nice if they could first sort out basic stuff like keeping windows on the screen after coming out of sleep mode and connecting/disconnecting an external monitor. On X11 no issues, but with Wayland stuff always gets thrown off the screen, with just a sliver of the bottom of the window still showing. Having to move every open application back by right-clicking it in the taskbar, selecting Move and manually dragging it back gets old real fast.

For a fixed PC that’s probably not really an issue, but on a laptop that gets moved around a lot it’s really annoying.

Good point, although admittedly I’ve had my fair share of Wayland-related issues with KDE. Unless you want those few extra FPS in a game or HDR, is there really a noticeable difference from an average user’s perspective?

KDE is allegedly better because it gives the user more options, but anyone who’s actually used it will tell you that it suffers from the same kind of bloat and braindead design decisions as gnome.

I’ve used KDE on and off for the past 20 years or so. These days I use KDE on my work laptop and Cinnamon on my personal one. Personally I think they both do their job just fine, but apparently I’m in the wrong.

Linux is now the best gaming system.

I’ll just share how my latest bout with gaming on Linux looked like, compared to Windows.

Install Anno 1800 on Windows:

• Start installation in Steam
• Ubisoft Launcher installs
• Anno 1800 starts
• Enjoy the rest of my evening

Install Anno 1800 on Linux:

• Install Anno 1800 in Steam
• Research how to start game
• Enable Proton compatibility layer
• Game fails to start due to missing Ubisoft Launcher
• Install Ubi launcher using method ‘add installer as game, set compatibility layer, install and change executable for application executable’
• Game fails to start due to missing Ubisoft Launcher
• Try with different Proton versions, fail each time
• Install Lutris and install Ubi launcher through that
• Game fails to start due to missing Ubisoft Launcher
• Give up for the evening

Next day:

• Read up some more
• Install Protontricks
• Encounter weird errors when starting it
• Try to find out what is going on
• Suppress tendency to just say ‘fuck it’ and start Windows
• Install Protontricks through Flatpack instead of system package, as the Flatpack version is slightly newer. Accept that this will result in a much larger installation due to not using system-provided libraries.
• Add Ubi launcher through protontricks, ignoring out-of-date instructions on the Internet
• Start game
• Cry at slideshow performance
• Give up for the evening

Next day:

• Research possible causes of performance issues
• Try multiple ways of enabling Nvidia GPU instead of integrated graphics
• Fail each time
• Turn off Secure Boot
• Correct GPU now available
• Better performance, although still not great
• Feel no enjoyment anymore at getting it to run or while playing

As much as I want to like it, this experience makes me feel that Linux is not fully ready for the masses yet.

I expect nothing else from ol’ Cheeto Face. He thought John McCain was a loser for getting shot down over Vietnam and being held as a POW, so I can only imagine what he would think of a bunch of guys drowning in a bog.

Unfortunately in my country HBO was only available as an add-on, so you’d need an expensive cable subscription you didn’t want and then pay extra for the concent you’d actually wanted to see. Pretty bad deal.

When I moved out my first decision was to not get cable anymore. Streaming wasn’t even a factor in that decision as Netflix was only just starting here. I just didn’t care about all the drivel broken up by increasingly long commercial blocks. Lack of quality killed TV for me, not streaming.

Absolutely not, as that would mean my company violates my country’s privacy laws. In my field of work there is no valid reason for wearing a body cam.

The modern milimeter-wave scanners both do not reveal anything and do not use ionising radiation. If radiation is a concern to you, you really shouldn’t be flying at all to be honest. The dose you get up there is much higher than you’d get from an X-ray scanner, although it is still negligible.

If it’s written in the law, it’s lawful. You can of course (and should!) debate about the morality of the diverse forms of lawful interception, but a blanket statement like ‘“lawful interception” is a fallacy’, is a fallacy in of itself.

Unreal only had a single Automag though, so either you are thinking of Unreal Tournament or you played on a modded server. Some servers did have dual automags (I’ve still got a mod and mutator lying around to get them in single player as well) and dual Automags (Enforcer in Unreal Tournament) did indeed dish out major punishment.

Yes, how could I forget Deus Ex. Incredible story and again such a wonderful soundtrack, not surprising as it was also composed Alexander Brandon, Michiel van den Bos, and Dan Gardopee.

As for Half-Life, that game was also something else. But part of me resents that game a bit because it overshadowed Unreal. 😋

The original Unreal. For me it was a perfect combination of beautiful graphics (back in the days of course) and a soundtrack which complemented and elevated the atmosphere of that game. And the gunplay was nice, with a collection of somewhat unconventional weapons. A relic from a time where developers were not afraid to experiment a bit.

Time to install FreeSpace Open again. 😄 For those who have managed to miss that project: it’s a completely rebuilt engine for FS2. Together with the MediaVPs from The FreeSpace Upgrade Project it makes the game look pretty modern again. Yes, they can indeed be a problem for people with allergies. In my case dogs (and cats unfortunately) trigger respiratory issues. I had that issue at a workplace where dogs were allowed, not fun times. And unfortunately medication like antihistamines are not an option for everybody, personally I get extremely drowsy from them, even from the latest generation meds.

And I think technically his shoes were still on. So just a flesh wound, walk it off buddy.
