It’s very useful in a lot of areas, blockchain being one, privacy being another, provable computation being a big one

Zero knowledge proofs. I’ve worked in the industry for a couple years now, and I’ve got a lot of hope it will actually help us fix the internet, stop spam bots, and allow for people to interact with better control over their data.

I think looking through the comments on this post about AI stuff is a pretty good representation of my experience on lemmy. Definitely some opinions, but most people are pretty reasonable 🙂

I see a mix, don’t get me wrong, Lemmy is definitely opinionated lol, but I don’t think it’s quite black and white.
Also, generally, I’m not going to not share my thoughts or opinions because I’m afraid of people that don’t understand nuance, sometimes I don’t feel like dealing with it, but I’m going to share my opinion most of the time.
OP asked what you self host that isn’t media, self hosted LLMs is something I find very useful and I didn’t see mentioned. Home assistant, pihole, etc, all great answers… But those were already mentioned.
I still have positive upvotes on that comment, and no one has flamed me yet, but we will see.

I think most people on here are reasonable, and I think local LLMs are reasonable.
The race to AGI and companies trying to shove “AI” into everything is kind of insane, but it’s hard to deny LLMs are useful and running them locally you dont have privacy concerns.

Local LLMs, I’m surprised no one brought that up yet. I’ve got an old GPU in my server, and I’m running some local models with openweb-ui for use in the browser and Maid for an Android app to connect to it.

Love this

As an alternative to the bbq sauce: hot sauce (cayenne based usually), spicy brown mustard, and some (apple cider) vinegar

Maybe, i haven’t seen it yet though

The only feature I want that jellyfin doesn’t have (or I haven’t found it) is shuffle. Throwing on how it’s made or mythbusters on shuffle is great background stuff.

They are browser based, their whole UI and much of the in car backend is a JavaScript.

I agree. I switched from Roku to apple tv recently (and I don’t really have apple devices), and it was worth it.

I just switched, looks like uber is working for me

I work for an org that makes a bunch of privacy protocols. Semaphore, RLN, and MACI. All of these use zero knowledge cryptography. Semaphore is a way of proving you are part of a group but without revealing who you are, RLN is the same thing plus spam resistance, and MACI is “minimal anti-collusion infrastructure” which is voting while trying to prevent bribery.
I imagine this is a bit outside of what you are asking for but thought I would share

What do you give a shit about?
Sometimes finding anything to care about when you are depressed, but if/when you find something you care about beyond feeling better, you should really think about why, and if it’s healthy, lean into it.
Some people care about creating, some about building, some discover, service to others, analysis, working with their hands, being in nature. What do you gravitate towards? Some people go down a path they don’t care about, because of external pressures, or comfort, or just trying to get by.
If you don’t care to advance the career you are in, maybe it’s time to think about why.
I trust that if you know yourself enough to admit in words on the internet that you aren’t helping yourself, you are damn self aware enough to think about these things. Don’t worry about the stress of changing careers or losing progress or what other people think. Just figure out what you might care about, which paths you could see yourself going down, and mentally explore those and see what you give a shit about. Find some intersection between stuff you give a shit about and what is productive, and motivation comes. Motivation is a by-product, a secondary effect, of having something motivating to work on.

They messed up the title. It’s “Detroit become human”

We need consumer privacy laws

Agreed, do endeavour, plain arch (maybe with something like arch install), or hard pivot and try nixos. Manjaro has never really been a good option.

Nobody fills that form out unless they are publishing a book or they still work for the govt.
If you like experimenting with cryptography check out circom, it’s a relatively simple language to program zero knowledge cryptography. I was the head of development at a programmable cryptography research and development organization for a bit, it’s fun stuff, we researched and experimented with zero knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, and some more far fetched stuff like fully homomorphic encryption and indistinguishablility obfuscation. What you are trying to do definitely can be done with zk.
Also, please never use xor again lol
