Hmm, would be great if there was a like a nice, accessible list of these things for new users - tools and the like - and a link to that list was available on the Sign-up screen, right across Lemmy…
Would certainly go some way to reducing the friction between starting and knowing what you’re doing.

I’d counterpoint by saying that Meta isn’t a person - up its not really a apples-to-apples comparison here. They’re trying to get in here to make money. Pure and simple. I’d wager we aren’t - we’re here hour community.
Our wants and needs are opposed, that’s why I’m not comfortable with letting them commercialise/monopolise whatever they want - especially somewhere that could offer us a more healthy online experience and upset their business model long term.

I’m not a programmer so I have no idea what’s what, but the functionality of that sounds really cool and would serve really well to uphold the whole “social media as a decentralised, non-static web of communities” framework going on here

I don’t know, I think we have a responsibility to eachother to keep the Fediverse ecosystem healthy - Facebook/Meta isn’t exactly a humanist… well, anything.
I think it’s fair the white blood cells of our ‘body’ are calling for re-enforcements on this.

Not for owners, for sure - but for prospective ones? The catalogue of possible games/uses is a bit thin for a 1k+ piece of kit… I think it would be incredible to own a HOTAS warthog but I’m not playing flying games very often right now, you know?
If I did, I probably would because at that point I want to enjoy the kit I have. Imo, that means right now, a flight sim controller set up due my use case is a bit of a gimmick - but if I already owned it I’d seek out things to utilise it, reducing its gimmicky position in ‘the roster’.
Gimmicky is kind of a subjective term in that way, it’s all about the individual utility offered.
But yeah - that comment was a bit snarky, I get that too.
Feels more like a Chekhovs gun than a red herring at the moment but I hear what you’re saying.
Yeah, not a fan of the ominous shadow threads™️ casts. I don’t trust them not to flood the fediverse with assorted toxic garbage to push people back towards their walled garden platforms.
The fediverse offers something radical - a new shot at genuine self determination and a socialised, self-governing internet. That shit spells B-A-D N-E-W-S for incumbent platforms (imo) and they’re bad actors in general; they wouldn’t think twice about smothering anything that threatens their short/long term profits. Who’se going to stop them?
Might be a little bit overly risk concious but goddamn. If I were them, I’d be trying to kill alternative ecosystems before they grew - especially if mine (metas) is both trash to use, and be used by.
Cool to see that JellyKey is still going strong!
Having one of their pieces was always a “woah, wouldn’t THAT be cool” type of aspirational things for me. Very skilled craftspeople - have lots of respect for their work.
