And this is exact the reason I’m building a Home Assistant instance with local voice processing. Right now it takes a few seconds to process a request and take action on my crappy 1.8ghz laptop with only 4gb of RAM, but it basically does everything I use Alexa for. This announcement is just encouraging me to build a better server with an esp32 satellite.

Yes, I understand that. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 165 Fahrenheit will kill parasites. But health regulations on farms have a essentially eliminated the risk of parasites to begin with, specifically to mitigate the idiots. RFK admitted to eating in a foreign country that doesn’t have the same safety standards. That’s the reason he was infected with parasites.

To be fair, health regulations have largely eliminated the risk of parasites in pork. Though that doesn’t apply everywhere in the world.

Build her a server, install it at her house, set up some sort of automated DVD ripping mechanism so that she can digitize her own collection, wait for the inevitable tech support call, then go spend a Sunday afternoon fixing her server and digitizing her collection for her while she makes you dinner. You get to call it “quality time”, and you get fed while keeping her happy and her collection as far away from yours as possible. Win/win, everyone is happy.

I could do that…but then I lose easy access to the assistant. I could set up the tap on back function, but that doesn’t work when it’s in a holder in the car. There are no options that I can find that would let me assign the assistant to open on power + vol up. Unfortunately these phones aren’t as customizable as as I’d like them to be. Or at least not by default, but I don’t want to go through the trouble of flashing a new OS yet.

On my 8, that just activates the Google assistant. To get to the power menu, you have to press power (oddly named button, to be honest) and vol up at the same time. But these are active acts that you have to think about and verify to make sure they did what they are supposed to. Mashing the power button 5 times is succinct. I don’t have to guess how many seconds I’ve waited. I don’t have to feel to make sure I’m hitting the vol up instead of vol down accidentally. I count 5 times, 6 to make sure, and I can drop it while being certain that it’s going to call 911. That’s what I want in an emergency. A quick distinct action that requires no guessing to make sure it works. It makes sense once you stop and think. Nothing else about the power button makes sense, but at least that part does.

Except it doesn’t activate by mashing the power button 5 times. On my Pixel 8, that activates the emergency dialer that will automatically call 911 if you don’t cancel the prompt in 5 seconds. I did not know that before. Probably a better use for that feature. It also points out the different ideologies of Apple vs Android.

Which is funny because the marketing speak screams at me through that entire post. I recognized it as spam not only from the link, but from the “In terms of finding a job…” as well. I know those kind of responses. I’ve written those kind of responses. Those responses now repel me.

Personally…I embraced my curly hair and started learning how to take care of it.

It started with the No-shampoo movement. The thing about most shampoos, especially dandruff shampoos, is that that are very harsh. “The tingling tells you it’s working” is bullshit. That’s your skin drying out from the chemicals. And the more you use it, the more dandruff you have when you stop and the more you need to use it. It’s a vicious cycle. Then you have to use a conditioner just to try to put moisture back into your scalp, but silicones can’t hydrate like natural oils that your scalp produces can. The biggest confusion is not washing my hair for a few days, and ending up with dandruff and greasy hair.

After not shampooing for about 3 months and then only using shampoo once every 2 weeks, I found that my dandruff almost disappeared. Almost…because I was still using harsh shampoos that would strip all the moisture from my head and dry out my scalp. My hair would be oily for a few days and then return to normal after a few showers. That’s when I decided to grow out my hair and learn to take care of the curls. I discovered that most shampoo are harsh because of the sulfates, parabens, phthalates, alcohols, and other chemicals designed specifically to strip your hair of oils. Switching to sulfate free shampoos stopped that cycle immediately. Learning about conditioners and other hair products brought out curls that practically every woman I meet would kill to have for themselves. And I haven’t had dandruff or itchy dry scalp ever since, even on the coldest and driest days in the winter.

Treat your beard the same way. The skin underneath still needs the oils it produces to stay healthy. Use the same sulfate free shampoo to wash your beard and allow your skin to heal and rehydrate naturally.
