I feel so proud of postmarketOS! I’ve been using them for 2nd life uses for phones, tablets, and chromebooks with very minimal problems. It’s like having an obscure band you follow all of a sudden getting mentioned everywhere and I couldn’t be happier for the project (like the 3rd time on Lemmy this week alone I’ve seen them mentioned).
If you have some scrap equipment throw it on and report your findings! There’s a lot of testing that needs done and information needs to flow. I’ve done a “recipe” notebook with an old chromebook, a tablet for easy video viewing I can send videos to (instead of making my partner come to the comp), and like 3 other devices that I haven’t finished with but pmOS will be a part of it.
Join their testing team if you have devices that aren’t listed! Unlike most requirements, if it’s not listed that just means it probably hasn’t been tested…not that it doesn’t work on your device. (they could probably also use some editors for their text instructions, it’s quite back and forth with links trying to find proper instructions).

Not arrogant, I get the hierarchy statements being mundane especially for someone who’s inundated within the systems themselves. The honest answer to this is sometimes everyone doesn’t learn at the same pace or get upset when they’re confronted with something different. For instance, if I were working with someone that didn’t complete school or had a learning disability, I could see them eventually grasping milli and centi (I still hesitate with if I’m using them properly with MM/mm/mM) but then hekto-deka is another tall order for someone who just wants to get off work and have a beer without the hassle lol. A school yard saying that uses order listing as an acronym for a Mnemoic like EGBDF in music (Every Good Boy Does Fine) would be cool.
Mostly though, it’s more about like the “foot” measurement thing. Something like wrapping my head around the average body weight, cool factoids like comparing volumes of water or like someone commented that 100 is the boiling point, etc.

wow, I can’t imagine randomly losing your possibly favorite toys every couple of months would have any sort of effect on a person when they become an adult. How many toys are you buying your kids throughout the year?!? Just get them proper storage and explain to them their items need to fit into it (shelves, toy chests. etc). Let them decide which items when it gets too much, you’re gonna have a hoarder on your hands when they get older if they always fear losing their items or never learn to let go of things they don’t need anymore.
lol I don’t want to get lost in analogies, but these sweets are in their pocket. Their friends are giving them new brands and better sweets. You know what sweets you have in the cabinet, you have no idea how many sweets your kid is eating per day. This is all pretty generic through when considering the entire childhood. Of course you’re gonna be there and watch your kid so they’re not over doing it at age 4, but 12+? Eh, it’s an uphill battle you should stay vigilant on till they’re legally and showing at least basic adult responsibility.
If you’re nearby your kid when you’re in the park or they’re at school interacting with other kids (etc), you’re gonna be curious and want to make sure they’re doing alright but just kinda peripheral paying attention to their actions while mingling yourself. It can be treated respectfully and non intrusively by just checking your router (other devices), what kind of traffic is coming in and out (generic safety), and maybe something along the lines of just asking to see their app activity in their account to get an idea of how they’re spending their time without diving right into their private data.
I don’t really understand the disconnect going on here and maybe everyone is a lot more innocent than I was. I for sure was up to some bullshit online at a young age and that was dial-up. We’re really looking at everything like how the election went, social influencers, and young people getting radicalized online and just throwing our hands up saying it’s all good?
Oh boy, good luck with that outlook in today’s age. You can trust them to get into shit, I believe helicopter parenting has become prevalent because we’ve lost the “village” it takes to raise a kid. You used to be able to trust a parent to step in if they were over at someone else’s house and a discussion got nasty or a fight broke out. You would have neighbors who looked after the kids and would let you know if they were up to some shit. Now the kids talk on discord and other apps, completely unsupervised or at times even inaccessible (after the fact) if they’ve set it up right. You’ve got algorithm’s trained on millions of users to suck your kids in, never ending entertainment with minimal effort.
As a parent, who is completely conscious of everything going on around social media and technology, you will absolutely need to step in. Most adults can’t even handle it, you WILL have to be the parent who sets boundaries on the stimuli their brain craves but has a negative impact on their overall health. You don’t instill healthy eating into a child by giving them unlimited money and telling them to make their own decisions. You work with them, share your experience, let them cook sometimes but monitor over and see the results of their activity. Are they making healthy choices or ordering door dash?
Make it more difficult for them by setting restrictions they have to learn to bypass, even if it feels ridiculous it’s a whole different setup for effort-reward. It will interest them into getting into deeper components of technology and how everything works. It’s absolutely what kids are suppose to do, just like we always figure out a way to get away with shit which ultimately improves various skills.
Lemmy’s kinda helped me see a different perspective. It’s just old man talk. Like, the internet is still there. Everything that once was, still is. Just a lot more shit the rest of everyone is usually using. Stop trying to keep up with everyone using all these popular sites for everyday life like they did with TV. Find obscure websites and dedicated forums for your topic. Don’t rely on Googletm to find the internet for you. Before, you actually had to find a site (magazines, social/network circles) then hope that site had a search function if you’re looking for something particular (this is the old internet everyone craves lol, it wasn’t perfect by any means/rose tinted glasses).
You can use the internet just like you did back in the day and have the same experience. It’s just that the majority of the world uses the connection for a “TV”-like feed with main popular sites and apps. There’s still more people using and improving the “old internet” compared to the 90’s, so it’s only a net positive in my book.

Honestly, I just hate the instance bashing. Most people didn’t have a real informed “choice” when it comes to their first instance. This seemed like an instance with good uptime and connectivity to me compared to the single admin instance I had before, the only factor that really matters to me. I see what you’re saying about % of users, but those people exist on every instance and like you said, they can just jump over and make a new account. If I’m being judged by the .ml next to my name and not the content of my reply, then they were really never going to listen to anything I had to say regardless, so I’ve decided to stay with this instance.
I think you’re seeing more arguments on those instances because it’s more of a melting pot. People who all agree with each other’s perspectives and have similar life experience aren’t going to have a lot to discuss besides patting each other on the backs and talking about subtle nuances of the subject matter. I do agree with your entire premise of the downvotes, which is why I’m replying to begin with. I like the thought of a downvote system, something that would hinder off-topic or abusive material, but it’s just horribly abused by users.
A proper system would see two competing articles and the one which provides the most information with a legible format would be upvoted the most. Now it’s which one has the most comments, what user uploaded it, what website was the article published on, which headline is catchier regardless of the article’s own words being taken out of context, what instance/community is this being posted on, etc etc.
Maybe I’m just confused and using this site and reddit wrong. From my conversations about downvotes, my understanding is less time is being spent on reading the article or links, and more just running through upvoting/downvoting like it’s tinder matches. I don’t get it because it’s not like youtube suggestions where you’re creating an algorithm for your likes/dislikes. You’re just creating a general feed of populace attention-seeking content and creating the pattern for a hive mind to form.
I think any of the many solutions would be a step forward, votes being public (all your other interactions are public/not done anonymously, and likes/dislikes has no commonality to democratic voting so people need to stop conflating the two), blocking any downvotes like lemmynsfw.com successfully implemented (you can still report off topic, etc), can only dowvote in joined communities or content you’ve engaged with, and many other ideas. All sorts of solutions that will stop us from going down the same path as Reddit, luckily we have instances to experiment different approaches with that we can point to for data in the future. I guess I prefer more of a forum style but those always get overtaken by zealous admins/site ideology and eventually hyperactive community members meaning it’s hard or not worth the effort to actually engage with the drama surrounding the subject you want to discuss (even some shroom forums get like this, absolutely crazy).
I’m not sure on the technical aspect but I think “instance blocking” should be an OPT-IN message sent to users of the instance. For example, say lemmy.world wanted to block lemmy.ml, hexbear, and reddthat. Each instance is added to a “Suggested blocked instance” setting in your profile and a message is sent to the user notifying them the opt-in option is available. Could have a whole list with descriptions besides the instances for why the suggested block option is there. Users would be informed with an actionable option and not automatically opted in. Could just be a toggle-able switch list in user settings.
This whole thread is wild with Lemmy expectations lol. Reddit is a link aggregation site, same as here. Are you wanting more artists and authors posting on here for it to be considered “original”? All the links to articles or sites people are posting…aren’t really considered original. There are plenty of discussions going on that are original, but they tend to be upvoted less than posted link content so you have to usually search them out in the actual community.

IANAL but is that really true? You don’t “Buy” anything on steam, you’re licensing a subscription to use the software under their terms. Downloading a torrent wouldn’t be covered by that. Purchasing a game though and having the same data backed up on a device is covered (identical to a torrent download), at least I thought that was the legal case for rom’s and such even being able to exist in the first place.
Oh geez, I completely forgot the feeling of installing a fresh new windows on a comp (like windows XP, hung onto a version called XP-black for the longest). Now adays it’s more about removing crap windows installs so it runs smoother. I wish I felt that way about linux, it is faster but I’m always jumping between distros and feels more like a test run to see if I like it.
