The kickstarter is official too, Daniel tooted it recently.
I don’t get why people are so interested in the fediverse.
Because Mastodon is Twitter without the possibility of an Elon Musk and Lemmy/Piefed is Reddit without the possibility of a Steve Huffman. You clearly feel that you can do better than the collective efforts of the ActivityPub devs so I am rooting for you!
“Lemmy” is actually not a platform like Reddit, it’s software and the network of instances running that software is decentralized (Lemmy uses the ActivityPub protocol) meaning each instance is operated by a different person (or group). There are also other similar softwares like Piefed and mBin that work pretty well with Lemmy. That is all to say that if an Admin or Mod is “getting fascisty” you can block that instance, join another, or even create your own. That’s the beauty of ActivityPub!
lol I was going to suggest “it just works”
I would not have suggested that before this year but it’s definitely true now, or at least truer than for Windows/Apple.
Some more popular games will have mods to make the Xbox buttons look like a DS4s buttons, buuuut if the game studio devs didn’t create the assets then they didn’t create them.
I loved the constant pop-ups with offers for things I could purchase. If I don’t purchase something frequently enough I get sad so it’s nice to have an OS that cares about my well being.
I was just thinking the same thing. It’s rare that the bullshit from tech companies is so quickly identified packaged and labeled like that (even if we are still calling it “AI”).
I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in the intelligence of a woman who would marry a Lemmy user.
The average Joe or Jane have no idea about ad blocking possibilities. They think ads are just the normal price you pay for surfing the web.
Actually about a third of all users have an adblocker installed. Adblocking has been mainstream for a while, no doubt why Google finally stopped pretending they were OK with it.
What you’ve expressed is not pessimism it’s cynicism.
The difference is that Lemmy is not centralized. So it can’t really be over-populated. If an instance is poorly modded and doesn’t have that vibe you like you can find one that does. The more people using Lemmy the more options there will be, it’s the opposite of Reddit.
I quit because contributing my labor made me complicit.
I get not wanting to grow the userbase of lemmy.world which is already kinda bloated but there is basically infinite space for new instances to be added.
And unlike last time there won’t be an easy way for mods to point users towards Lemmy.
(Copied from the thread on /c/Quark’s)
I quit as the top mod of /r/StarTrek in 2021 in protest against Reddit’s platforming of vaccine disinformation subreddits. Then in 2023 during the API protest, myself and several of the remaining mods (including mods from /r/Risa and /r/DaystromInstitute) started StarTrek.website.
The consensus I’ve seen on Lemmy has been largely “we don’t need to spread the word about our open platforms because Reddit will do something stupid again and there will be another protest and Lemmy will be promoted there”. So I hope we can take this as a lesson that we can’t rely on platforms being shitty in order to switch society over to open standards. We need to Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed good as well as known.
I see, I wasn’t comparing an article to a video, I was comparing a video to a text summary of the same video.
Those are great drives but I would not want one of those in the room where I sleep haha
Honestly I had the same thought. But on the other hand, internet outrage talking points have also become extremely formulaic…
