Anyone who is mad enough to visit the US for attending a sports game in this day and age almost deserves that treatment. Like, are you ok?

I guess there is a hope that if more people join the Fediverse existing instances and communities won‘t just become more bloated but people create their own alternatives. However I have to say that I have no interest in running one myself. I‘m mostly here to discuss things that pique my interest. Running a community just isn‘t what I‘m here for and I‘m afraid too many people are just like me in that regard and we‘ll create an environment that‘s all too similar to Reddit.

I also don‘t think it‘s good for the platform when people leave a community with a grudge to create a competition „with blackjack and hookers“ style. I want people to come and just create communities because they want to. That‘s where I see a future for the Fediverse.

But I also wouldn‘t want to subscribe to 5 communities about the exact same topic because that would just spam my feed with the same threads probably. However I would actually like to hop between them easily so I don‘t stick around the same few people or have to abandon one for another. A lot would have to change about the way we interact with the platform (UI) and how it‘s connected for this to work though. I‘m thinking about subscribing to topics and it shows you a good mix of communities where overlapping threads are kind of stacked or something and you could swipe cards to see comments from different communities about it or something. This is a tough one to figure out. Might not even be possible at all.

A lot of our biggest communities still have like two mods taking care of everything and are prone to cherry picking. It‘s the same old forum structures where the internet bubble effect is just as strong if not stronger than on larger, already problematic platforms. Some of the things I‘ve seen and experienced lately bring back memories from those internet forum days. Good ones but also the worst ones. And I have to admit it makes me doubt the Fediverse is actually scalable. There‘s just a lack of accountability in the end.

Which is not to say a federalized platform isn‘t an alternative to giant corporations. Those have their own problems and fair share of fuck ups. But I think I‘m already starting to see the limits of the Fediverse. At least in it‘s current stage.

Funnily enough that’s exactly what many full time microbloggers have been asking from Xitter for years. I always thought it was a silly idea and if you want to make money from your tweets print and sell them as a book like any other self-important celebrity or become a ghost writer for other people’s Xitty microblogs. If you’re that good, people will pay, surely.

And just like that Youtube becomes slightly less bearable again.

Well that’s to be expected when you set extremely unambitious requirements in the first place. In practice it’ll still be a disaster one way or another because they just don’t think things through. The idea of “personal public transit” suggest they want to compete with buses but don’t meet any of the criteria of a public bus.

Vtubers can do that as well if they’re doing it in the right category. It just so happens that they almost never did in the past and kept breaking TOS. The rules are not new at all by the way, just worded more clearly because some users keep throwing fits. Twitch is a train wreck for all sorts of shortcomings and bullshittery, but this isn’t really news.

Sites like these MADE the anime industry outside Japan because Japanese corporations absolutely suck at advertising and distributing their products till this very day. Almost no one would care about anime if it was up to anime industry executives and they should be glad to make some merch sales from people watching fansubs. And yeah yeah it’s a little more complicated but the main issue is how stupidly IP is handled in Japan, especially in regards to anime.

I legitimately do not have enough space on my phone to install all the crappy bloatware of all the stores I go to. They quite literally ask the impossible of me.

So they introduced shorts just to… lengthen them? The people behind Youtube are so incredibly lost it’s almost unbelievable.

I guess my point is that it isn’t worth an article in mid 2024 because it really only repeats what has been said a million times a about the subject. Even before it was bought. No one else would’ve paid much more than $9 Billion at any point because it is legitimately insane.

If I remember correctly the evaluation of Xitter has been around $9 Billion for years so they’re basically saying it tanked only a little if you adjust for inflation.

You don’t lose anything for the moment, but it might come back to bite you later regardless. Because Youtube needs to grow until the end of times but can’t, it will end ugly one way or another. It’s more of a symptom of a bigger problem than an isolated, ‘smart’ business decision.

Youtube doing what I told every Premium adversary they would logically do after dumping more and more ad space onto the site. And to make Premium look worth the price, they’ll continue to shove more ads in your face just before, you guessed it, doing another price hike. Rinse and repeat. Premium users are strong drivers of this enshittification so I will continue to call them out on it whenever they tell you to join the scam as well. I’ll stick to my ad blockers.

The most blatant examples in recent years are Monsanto and the Diesel scandal. Monsanto was an untouchable force until they got essentially taken over and now it rains lawsuits to extract stupid german money from them. US courts wouldn’t be so willing to make them pay in a million years if they still were American.

Same with the Diesel scandal really, though the hypocrisy is even more obvious here. Again, stupid german money. American car makers that did the exact same thing? Slap on the wrist at best.

Miele tarifs under Trump? Well here he just feared superior quality, really. They didn’t even do anything.

And now we’re seeing the same treatment with foreign tech companies. The American government wants to block TikTok or at least be in full control of it but can’t really do so without looking like big fat hypocrites. And now other countries wonder if they should block Facebook, Google and Xitter for the same reason. They threaten democracy and our freedom.

I know you’re being ironic but it makes only sense they’re American. If they weren’t, some US court would’ve torpedoed them to bits with lawsuits and tarifs like they always do. They love that stupid foreign money but don’t hurt their own American darlings for doing the same harm to everyone.

What is the industry as a whole trying to get out of this advertisement craze anyway? In the 80s many people in the developed world earned more than twice of what they needed for living. They had lots of cash to just shop around. Now most people barely earn enough to get by and we’re bombarded with easily a hundred times more ads or more. Sorry, but I can’t afford your millionth AI powered NFT sneakers subsciption model no matter how many ads you throw at me. I just cant’t.
