I’d love BTT on Linux too. The hardest thing for me with a move from macOS to Linux is losing the ability to zip about the OS with a trackpad. Also, I’ve had BTT set for years so that clicking the middle button on a mouse shows Mission Control. God, I wish I could work out how to do that in Mint.
Out of interest, I just looked up the actual benchmark scores.
A ‘13 Pro with a Xeon 2697v2 scores 4891 on multi core
My 15” M2 MacBook Air scores 9735 on the same.
It’s astonishing how much Apple leapt ahead when the M-series chips dropped. Sure, the Intel machines on macOS still have their uses, (I’m typing this on a 2014 Mac mini that I use for work), but Apple have done an incredible job of flooding the market with solid hardware to install Linux on.
They’re almost down to a price where I’d consider picking one up just because I think they look awesome, and are reasonably easy to max out their spec. Trouble is, that maxed out spec might tip its benchmarks over my M2 Macbook. Might.
As someone with ADHD, I’m all about the 5 minute timer.
If I spend 0 minutes cleaning my kitchen, I will clean 0% of my kitchen. But if I set a 5 minute timer, I’ll almost always completely finish whatever cleaning I needed to do.
How is the $25 a month tier considered ‘better value’ than the $10 tier if your head unit has bluetooth? That badge is completely meaningless.
And longevity. I have a 2011 MBP thats now running Debian and is still a tank. I’ve had two MacBooks since I got it but the damn thing refuses to die.
My daily laptop is an M2 Air which is ridiculously powerful for my needs, so when Apple drop OS support for it I’ll put Asahi on it and keep it trucking until the wheels fall off.
And that 2011 will still be going.
I spent much of yesterday getting Debian to work on my old MacBook.
In theory it’s relatively straightforward, but there are so many little niggles and roadblocks that it really sours the experience.
I set up a user account upon install, as it asked me to, but when I tried to do something with sudo it just kept telling me that I wasn’t in the Sudoers group. Mine is the only account on the machine, why isn’t that set up by default? So I searched for a solution, which appears to have a bunch of different ways to do it, but none of them quite worked, or worked first time. The first few solutions involved using the terminal, but in the end it was easier to open the document in the file manager and edit it as a root user. Linux users are hard for using a terminal when they could just open a document in a text editor.
In the end I got everything set up how I wanted, but it probably shouldn’t have taken a whole day of irritation.
Here in the UK our economy has been on its knees for the past few years because conservatives work only to funnel as much cash as possible into their mates’ pockets.
Their ‘austerity measures’ crippled the middle and working classes, and literally killed scores of disabled and sick people. But it freed up money for tax cuts to the wealthy, so it was a good job well done for them.
And that’s why I fucking hate conservatives.

That’s the same spec as mine, though I also replaced the DVD drive with a second SSD.
And yeah, in theory you dual boot, but in practice I managed to bugger mine up, so it’s 100% Mint.
Yeah, that’s the route I’m expecting to take. It’s why I’m dipping my toes into Linux now.
I keep pondering grabbing one of those on the cheap and getting one of those kits that turns it into a really nice 27” monitor.
I still use a 2011 MacBook Pro. It’s running Linux Mint now and hasn’t been my primary laptop for a couple of years now, but it’s still a solid machine. In fact, as is the norm with Apple stuff, it lost OS support long before it stopped being a viable laptop.
Fortunately, Opencore Legacy Patcher exists…
Oh yeah, I agree. I really only chose Samsung because they’re one of the very few companies with the same kind of market presence as Apple.
As someone who has recently begun dipping in to Linux and trying to figure it all out, I agree with this.
I feel like if Samsung or someone embraced Linux in the way Apple have macOS, it could very easily become a serious contender to Windows. But I guess no one could trust Samsung to not fuck it all up and make it a proprietary fork that would end up having nothing to do with Linux.
Our family’s first proper PC back in around ‘93 had a 1gb HDD. I remember strutting about at school like I was the top shit because of how great my computer was.
These days I have a modded iPod mini with 128gb that I’m getting close to needing to increase because of my love of 320kbps MP4 files.
Here in the UK you can buy booze more or less anywhere that you can buy food. Almost any supermarket or corner shop will supply you what you want.
