  • You’ve gotta block the communities yourself. I feel your pain, but what you’re requesting isn’t going to happen.

Every time I come across an anime community, I block it. But there are so many that keep popping up…

My block list is filled with so many anime, furry, and shitposting communities. It’s a bit annoying and an uphill battle, but you’ve got to go to their communities and block them individually (but also block the anime instances).

It’s different on other platforms (like mastodon) but on lemmy, it only blocks posts from the blocked instance. Users from Threads would still be interacting in comments with the user who blocks their instance.

Regardless, I believe they should be defederated by instance admins on ethical grounds. Meta/FB have run unethical, uninformed experiments on their users, including purposefully inducing depression in their users.

The fact that Meta has assisted in genocide should be grounds for defederation by instances which claim to protect and care about their users.

Meta’s platforms have also played a key role in radicalizing users, and they purposefully marketed Threads to far-right extremists.

    Here’s my argument with citations

There’s also good arguments to defederate and block them from the fedivers based on EEE.

If an instance’s admins claim they care about protecting their users and providing a safe, healthy community but are federated with Threads, then they are either uninformed or liars.

  • The “Is it good for us? Let me modify my interpretation/beliefs” act you’re describing is in itself rationalizing. What you’re focusing on is their motivation for doing so. And yes, it is a simple motivation.

You are right that there is no reasoning with radical groups like MAGA/QAnon/mainstream conservatives. We cannot pull them out of their extremism with reason. They have to want to change themselves.

Trying to persuade family who have fallen into this extremism typically backfires and results in frustration, anger, and hostility. This tends to just push the family member(s) further into the community they feel “gets them.”

All of this is cited and elaborated on in this blog post of mine. (I have ads turned off and do not benefit in any way from my blog.)
