  • Exactly. And frankly, from a brewing and chemical engineering perspective, the consistency and subtle flavors of a light beer is more impressive than something like an IPA where you can just blow out the drinker’s palate with hops and win an award for it.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love big beers. It’s just that I’m almost 40 with three hyperactive, mischievous, and hellaciously smart kids under 10 (and a partner to match); there are many times where light and predictable is really nice.

  • You’re definitely right; maybe someone like Dolly Parton would have been a better comparison, but even Dolly doesn’t really capture his big Swift is.

Really, my first instinct was to go with Neil Young because he’s one of my favorite artists of all time, and I do think that a lot of his biggest hits weren’t really overly political, probably split about 50:50 even if we remember the more political stuff now. For every “Ohio” and “For What It’s Worth,” there’s a “Heart of Gold” and “Helpless.”

But really I’m splitting hairs because I like talking about music and playing the devil’s advocate. Your initial point that Swift isn’t known for writing protest music is absolutely correct.

  • I was lucky enough to see Ibram X. Kendi speak on anti-racism in higher education, and it was illuminating to realize that, as a white, cis-het man, I might not be able to work within the system to change the system without actively breaking laws.

The example he used was actually affirmative action and EEO standards and how the best an ally can do in certain situations might be to put your thumb on the scale even when it’s technically illegal.

Basically, if you want to be anti-racist, you’ve gotta be Chaotic Good since the system is literally rigged against people of color.

  • Granted I only married into a Minnesotan family and my experience with the Dakotas is fairly limited, but I would have said that they’re a pretty broad spectrum from east to west, especially in South Dakota. Rapid City is definitely pretty similar to Montana and Wyoming, but Mitchell, Sioux Falls, and Fargo are all far more similar to Minnesota

Then again, I’m thinking “culturally” not “politically,” so if you’re thinking about how they vote, you’re probably right that they’re likely more similar to MT than MN.

  • How can anyone who has uttered the words “rule of law” in the past 4 years want someone who has spent much of their life dodging the law over someone who had a career in enforcing it?

You misunderstand. Republicans won’t come out and condemn her as “too tough on crime” directly; they’ll fund attack ads and troll farms that will present her as “not progressive enough” as a way to depress progressive voter turnout.

It’s not about trying to sway centrists, because even Republicans can recognize that that would look hypocritical and contradictory. It’s about encouraging infighting among leftists and liberals
