  • In general, I do wonder how effective this constant onslaught of marketing is. At some point there have got to be diminishing returns, right?

This is what I keep saying, and it is a question that bothers me and riles me up far more than it ever should. Like I and all of my friends and family have just learned to auto tune out ads at this point. We are so constantly drowned in ads everyday that now my brain just automatically filters them out as background noise. The few times one does slip through I completely forget about it 10 seconds later as it is lost in the whirlwind of fast paced chaotic life where I can’t even remember if I ate breakfast that morning. Either that or it slips through because it is obnoxiously intrusive, in which case that product and company go on my shit list.

The only time an ad still works on me is if I am specifically looking for a product. In which case I still tune out 90% of targeted ads cause I know most of them are fake scams anyways. The other 10% I check user reviews from actual people to narrow down what I want.

I’m trained to distrust any ads now and even other posts about products online because everything online is either fake or a scam or both. Or the ads are for big brands that I already know exist and I know not to trust they’re ads as well because they are so constantly in my face. Like I really don’t need an ad to remind me that [major corporation brand] still exists, and I sure as shit ain’t gonna have whatever stupid thing they suggest be my first option.

How tf are ads supposed to work when we are so desensitized to them?

  • Honestly Buchanan wasn’t a great president, but I don’t think it really would have mattered what actions Buchanan could have taken.

By the time he got into office civil war had all but been guaranteed as decades of kicking the can on the issue of slavery, combined with increasing resentment in the divide of the north and south culturally. Had created a powder keg that arguably was lit back during the start of bleeding Kansas years before he even became president.

And with how stubborn the south was on not letting go of slavery, well there really was no diplomatic solution by then. Hence kicking of the can all those years prior. Maybe he could have enacted decisions that delayed the war, but it would have only been a delay.

The only way civil war could have ever been prevented is if the founding fathers had told southerns to pound sand and outlaw slavery back during the signing of the constitution. That or maybe if the cotton gin had been invented a decade later

  • Grow up and live your life free of internet nonsense like I am.

Bruh I keep seeing your name pop up multiple times in this thread and you’re always complaining about getting downvoted as if it matters or something.

You sound insufferable to be around and your comments read like someone who is compulsively online and just figured out how to base their personality around an edgelord DnD character.

Seriously in one comment someone asked why you’re even here and you responded with “let it burn” or “watch it burn” or some variation of that. Straight up same energy as saying I brood in a dark corner of the tavern lol. Get that 2010 edgelord cringe out of here man. Take your ass to a gym and get out of that nihilistic funk

The world may have a gun pointed at its head but that don’t mean you need to give it the ammo

  • Yeah then they switch to eating the douche, then switch back to the turd. It’s just a constant flip flop between the worst choices cause the electoral college and fptp voting we use are a cluster fuck that leads to terrible results and nobody except the wealthy getting what they want. Because people can’t be bothered with understanding cause and effect of actions and policies because the people on the tv told them what to think already.

And then Republicans cut taxes to rich again.

And then democrats don’t do or can’t do anything again

And the Republicans raise taxes for everyone else

And then democrats still do nothing except maybe hint at giving us free health care

And the Republicans repeal climate change bills

And the democrats still do nothing but act like maybe they might legalize weed even though they wont

And then a school gets shot up

    And then no one cares

    And then Republicans are elected

    And then democrats are elected

And on and on the world turns and we confirm time is just a flat circle where we do the same thing over and over again until we all die or start a revolution and then watch the same cycle repeat just with new names.

Everyone constantly bickering over stupid shit not realizing the real issues are caused by the people high up in the ivory towers holding all the wealth and resources

  • I think it’s more practical in terms of being used for layering with kevlar to reduce overall weight of a piece of body armor. While at the same time making it cheaper and more cost effective than traditional body armor materials as mentioned in the article.

So rather than this being used as an upgrade to kevlar (which with more testing it might be able too) it’s more like a side grade to reduce costs, as mentioned in the article silkworm silk is already used on a commercial and industrial level for other applications.

Granted it’ll probably be a good few years before the silk being made by these genetically modified worms is both made consistently and is more refined with further testing and then distributed. But still it’s something that material scientists will likely put to good use for reducing costs in lots of fields.

  • Take out “the letter” part and search as just: “countries in africa that start with k”. For some reason it seems the search involving the words “the letter” got fixed but others did not. Confirmed I was able to get both results by doing that and as of this typing I still able to switch between the two results by just adding or removing those words

  • How the fuck do you managed to just casually lose a 3090ti and a companies proto-type cooler design that came with it… AND THEN AUCTION IT OFF AFTER HAVING TWO EMAIL EXCHANGES SAYING IT WILL BE RETURNED!!

Like, I’ve been through some managerial fuck ups before with getting shit mixed up or sent off incorrectly…but this is on a level I’m having a very hard time understanding just what the fuck went wrong, how it went wrong, and if they even have a single rule or policy in place to keep track of items.

Then there was all the other errors they mentioned in the vid, like basic facts and specs about a component… Like how do you manage to fuck that up as well? That is the type of shit you look up in 5 seconds on Google.

LMG looks like a clusterfuck that needs some serious intervention

  • Fellow IT pro (don’t feel like it though) who also uses Windows here. It’s not the perfect OS, but I’m kinda getting tired lately of the amount of Windows bad over exaggeration going on (seriously I’m seeing people complain about windows not having features that it actually does have or running into errors that are entirely user related in cause). If I want to sit down and have a 90% chance of not having to mess with anything then Windows is my choice.

In the chance it does mess up it’s usually something I can find and fix easily even for obscure issues just cause the amount of exposure to errors and documentation for Windows is insane… That and usually a reboot will fix it 9/10 times.

While I do dual boot and use linux from time to time for enthusiast stuff, and while Linux is now fairly comparable to Windows in “it just works” stuff. A lot of programs still don’t have full or even well kept Linux versions. And after getting off of work where I deal with fixing a ton of complicated Linux errors, a lot of times with little documentation or similar error documentation. I just want something that will be reliable, fairly predictable, and also “just work”.

  • That sounds like a parents job then… Like shouldn’t the parents be the ones keeping up with what their kids access and look at on the internet to make sure they don’t access that stuff then? Shouldn’t they be, you know parenting them instead of letting the state parent everyone else for their failures?

I thought as an American adult I could do whatever I wanted within my legal rights free from government over reach.

Now I’m being told I have to give my personal ID to a non-government website (to eventually get hacked and leaked, hurray another vector of ID theft being opened up!)… Because other people can’t properly take care of their kids or take 15 minutes out of their day to set up a network filter like my parents did? Or even, you know… Just talk plainly to their kid…like growing up I saw blood and guts and gore from films (fictional entertainment and educational ones played at school) but my parents took the time to explain the things I see and interacted with in the world

This is gross government overreach and is entirely anthetical to American ideals. And as much as I hate the slippery slope argument, do you really trust the American government to not abuse the precedent being set here and expand on it?

This whole thing feels gross. Imagine the government later on starts saying that you have to have mandatory ID and facial scans to access certain websites. Imagine they use that to track down individuals who made aggressive or hyperbolic comments such as expressing dislike for a political party or person. I can imagine so many scenarios where this just goes from bad to worse that I can’t type fast enough. The potential for something like this to slowly or even rapidly become abusable is infinite since we already have countries enacting on these models that started out with these same or similar requirements before ramping up.

Combine this with the stuff Google is trying to do and oh man, the future looks bleak for free internet and communication and the further enrichment of the elite and powerful… Road to hell is paved with good intentions and all that
