Built my first PC in High School from scraps. Decided to try Ubuntu 10.04 (current at the time).

I was very impressed with how much performance a free OS could get out of my awful hardware. Have been using Linux in some form as my OS ever since.

What switches do people use now? I only ever had Cherrys until i switched to buckling springs. Most boards i see in stores dont seem to use Cherry, there is some sort of sheath on the switch stems now.

I still have one Cherry green board i really like. It seems built to last, and the switches feel great.

A conservative can’t be a Christian, and vice versa. Jesus was absolutely clear: He cares as much about the sex of who you sleep with as He does about the fabric of your underwear. Hatred is never justified.

Homophobia is a plenty good reason not to use a browser. Eich is an unscrupulous person at best, and his name leaves a stink on any project he is involved with. Unsurprising that Brave has decided to embrace the crypto fad and is moving towards becoming an ad platform.

Brave is a scammy project founded by a scummy person. I’m not sure FOSS development can fix that as long as he is in charge.

What do you use iTunes for? That stood out to me.

Also Chrome works fine on Linux, though Firefox is a better browser even on Windows.

Any tips for 4k gaming on Plasma?

If i force system scaling, everthing looks great but games dont get to use the full 4k. If i go with app scaling the games look fine but some apps are blurry.

I figured out a halfway solution where i use no scaling and just made the fonts bigger, but some ui elements are still tiny, and steam doesn’t scale at all.

Is there a way to disable system scaling for just selected applications?

Any examples? I think ive seen PS buttons before but i cant remember when, it’s almost always xbox layout/colors for me

This functionality is or is not part of the game itself. Windows game devs usually only expect an xbox controller, even though Dualshock and Switch Pro controllers are also popular.

I somewhat disagree about the stability. Maybe it’s no longer the case, but i used gentoo for a few years in the 2010s and it was always stable for me. A buggy upstream release of a package could be a problem in theory, but if that were to happen you can generally roll back the package and mask it from updates for a while. I never ended up needing to do that. However i agree that stability seems to be a high priority for Nix devs.

I used it for a few years, great distro. I think it’s dead now. It was based on Gentoo but with thoughtful defaults and a very good binary package manager.

I think NixOS has taken a bit of Gentoo’s mindshare. They solve similar problems with very different approaches.

On 8, (i dont remember for 8.1) there were some apps and menus that forced “tablet mode” and could only be interacted with in fullscreen. Other applications would open in what looked like tablet mode by default but you could break them out into desktop mode, after which they behaved normally.

The “phone-native” theoretical new user may become more of a real thing in the future too. When GNOME and Pantheon started developing in that direction I thought they were chasing ghosts, but now it turns out they may have just been a decade ahead of their time.

I don’t think the snap argument is without merit, I just think it’s an argument only had by a very technical subset of users. I think your comment illustrates that.

I don’t agree that anybody would be left “orphaned” on Ubuntu. LXD vs Podman is again a very technical question for a specific subset of users.

I also don’t agree that SteamOS is the goal for compatibility and support. Compatibility is best with Ubuntu, it’s the most widely deployed and used desktop distribution by far. Most other desktop distros are a rounding error when compared to Ubuntu user-wise.

I’ve also personally had a buggy experience with SteamOS. I wouldn’t use it as a desktop in its current state, but I’m aware some folks do just that.

For someone new to Linux who just needs to get on with their desktop work, Ubuntu is the best distro there is (flawed as it may be). Mint is also a good choice for the same reasons.

You can edit a text file to get it to stop checking for updates. IDK if this is viable on Debian but on Fedora it was never more than 1 update behind so I never had an issue in years
