What shady shit is Vivaldi doing? I’m out of the loop.

I opened Edge on a fresh install a couple days ago. The amount of things flashing and spinning and popping up trying to grab my attention actually gave me nausea.

And I don’t mean (just) ads, I mean even the starting page with all the news, weather, random popups telling me things i can do with Edge, the dark patterns as soon as I searched for Firefox in Bing, and so on.

The thought that there’s even a single human in the process of developing and maintaining that browser is incredible to me.

But well, I suppose some people do enjoy it. Just beware it won’t be as fast on Linux as it is in Windows since it isn’t as thoroughly integrated into the OS.

Can totally relate, lol. Except I first tried Ubuntu at around 12 (at the time it was considered the best for beginners), then nearly 20 years passed until I saw the same copilot button pop up, uninvited, in my task bar. That was the last straw for me.

Now I run OpenSUSE as a daily driver.

Very excited about this.

Recently discovered GNOME and loved the workflow, and now I find out Cosmic improves upon it with a more modern programming language behind it, which is native to Wayland.

I’m not much of an Alpha tester, but ill be following the progress of the project closely.

I 100% agree. Immutable is the way to go for beginners. Source: started on Mint and actually had a few problems. Now I’m on Bluefin (previously Aurora) and I have none.

I agree with you, lol. The other day I tried windows 11 at a store, and it was a pain. The learning curve was bigger from windows 10 -> 11 than from windows 10 -> KDE.

I’m curious about your choice of Gnome for your wife, though. If she’s hopeless with computers, why give her a less (imho) intuitive DE to play with?

Love to read this, I’m exactly on the same journey! Was using Mint until a few days ago, and now I’m on Aurora. There is a bit of a learning curve due to the atomic factor (some apps aren’t in Discover), but overall I’m happy with the stability.

Linux is truly wonderful and I look forward to learning more and seeing it grow. Fuck Microsoft, I’m done with their crap.

The advertising industry is real, and will keep existing, whether you like it or not. And yes, having the option to be an informed consumer and choose who gets to track you is a net positive. Some people LIKE targeted ads.

No. The GDPR is an all encompassing law, the logic of which being giving people THE CHOICE to let apps personalise their ads, or not. Apple takes away that choice by not allowing tracking by default on a per-app basis. This is what is at stake.

What Apple is doing is indeed disrespecting the spirit of the law by taking away the choice of being tracked, while also damaging EU businesses who rely on advertising because believe it or not, there are many small app creators as well as small advertising companies operating in the EU.

Its not the EUs fault that US companies keep breaking the law. Don’t break the law, don’t get fined. It really is simple. EU companies aren’t getting these fines.

Ultimately I don’t think these “privacy-first” domain registrars are a great choice, which is a rare thing to say about an internet service.

But you’re dealing with private property here and being ICANN-accredited (which Njalla isn’t) is kind of important if you’re gonna do something serious with your domain. You want those protections that excessive privacy won’t permit having.

Probably nothing would happen to you. They might correlate your IP address and ban you, but that’s likely it.

I mean, that’s probably the worst thing that can happen to your email, lol. Consider how much your online life depends on access to your email.

I kinda get it for people who want to compartmentalise their email.

I personally have 1 email I only use for banks and other important logins, and then a second one that is a bit more general use.

Were you using it with their custom OS, or did you try to install something else like Linux Mint?
