    If anyone is interested i have written a small script that i added to my crontab to check for, and if i don’t already have it, download and install each GE release daily (or however frequently you want it to run, it’s your crontab).

    make sure your .steam/root/compatibilitytools.d folder matches the steam_compatibility_folder variable below and update it to match if not

    #!/bin/bash

    latest_full_path="$(curl -sLOJ curl -s https://api.github.com/repos/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/latest | grep browser_download_url | cut -d\" -f4 | grep .tar.gz)"
    IFS_orig="$IFS"; IFS='/'; read -a full_path_as_array <<< "$latest_full_path"; IFS="$IFS_orig"
    latest="${full_path_as_array[-1]}"
    extracted_file_name="$(echo $latest | sed -e s/.tar.gz//g)"
    steam_compatibility_folder="$HOME/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d"

    if ! [ -d "$steam_compatibility_folder/$extracted_file_name" ]; then
      curl -LS "$latest_full_path" --output "/tmp/$latest"
      tar xzf "/tmp/$latest" -C "${steam_compatibility_folder}/"
      rm "/tmp/$latest"
    fi

  • I work for a multi billion multi national medical technology company at their office in central london. On day one after i got the job they gave me a brand spanking new top of the line macbook pro worth over £3k. I asked them for a bag for it and the IT guy who gave it to me looked like i slapped him in the face.

    “Am i supposed to walk around central london with 3k of macbook in a plastic shopping bag?”

    He produced some weird fabric envelope thing from a cupboard.

    Luckily i’m sad enough to turn up to work with my own laptop in my own bag so i did have a bag but he had no way of knowing that

  • It’s not hers. it’s one of my computers that i am deploying to her house for her and her family to use.

    It’s technichally for my neice but the rest of the family all also have access.

    no one in that household has expressed a specific preference of operating system. other than my brother in law texting me to tell me one of the old games he tried to install doesnt work (i did promptly offer to “make it work” but he declined).

    I have no problem with them installing windows on it if thats what they want. they wont be coming to me for technical support if they do though.

  • i installed linux mint on my sisters household PC last week.

    my dad did his usual grumblings about “it should be windows” and i just said “i’ve been out of the windows ecosystem completely for the last 5 years and partially for another 3 years beyond that. i no longer provide support for windows, if you want them to have windows you need to support it”

    he went quiet after that.
