Linux@lemmy.ml•On the unfortunate need for an "age verification" API for legal compliance reasons in some U.S. states
14·28 days agoPersonally, I think this first response nails it.

Linux is not sold. So you either need to force users to install this on their systems, or go eat rocks.
Enterprise distros on the other hand… Need to do this.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Plex’s crackdown on free remote streaming access starts this week - Ars TechnicaEnglish
4·4 months agoI don’t encode in AV1, I use HEVC. But while your argument is not unreasonable, it misses the component of file size and amount of disk space required.
HEVC (x265) takes half the space of x264. While it does require a more modern GPU, it can be run on lower powered Intel CPUs with an integrated GPU just fine, so long as the CPU is new enough. Though it can only handle 2-3 streams on a CPU like the Intel chips in a ZimaBoard. So you need to choose wisely.

Use DKMS drivers. They rebuild for the latest kernel as its upgraded. Using precompiled libs is a problem as many vendors dont keep up with the kernel.
Also, consider an OS that isn’t just a Ubuntu variant. Broken kernel upgrades are a thing of the past since our house dumped Ubuntu based distros.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it me or Ubuntu secretly replaces DEB Firefox with Snap Firefox?English
9·1 year agoThe deb version is a pointer to the snap in their repos. Nothings being replaced, it no longer exists. The deb version of Firefox in Ubuntu repos is a wrapper that installs snap and has no binaries in it. Has been for 3 years or so.

2·1 year agoYou don’t need special docks in KDE, its all configurable through the default desktop settings. You have enough knobs to make it look like anything.
Hey no worries, I dunno why I even called that out. Lack of sleep due to back pain and responding to posts at 2am I guess
That’s some shitty ‘hacking’…
But what makes these shell commands ‘bash’ exactly? Seems like this could be a half-dozen shells.
Also… why are ‘hackers’ always using a shell in some gui program?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the smallest city in your country that everyone can still instantly recognise the name of? What is it famous for?English
4·1 year agoDildo, Newfoundland, Canada: 803 people as of 2021.
Someone here mentioned Vulcan, Alberta - however given the qualifiers of country and size, its 1769 people disqualifies it.
Also, though I am a Trekkie myself and know that Vulcan is well known in those circles, it’s virtually unheard of outside them.
Meanwhile, Dildo:

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does anybody here still wish the Fediverse just had more people?English
4·1 year agoSpeaking personally, while I am here, my participation in Lemmy is lacklustre at best; same with Mastodon. I got burnt out from social media and the years from 2016 - 2024 have really ruined my enthusiasm. I think maybe a lot are in the same boat. Maybe we’ll see more people come out of the “shields up, dark times overload” in a year or so… and maybe it will take longer.
