Basically saving space. The dashcam I use records in h264, and I’ve been saving space (50%) by converting them to h265 (through my Samsung phone). Handbrake is far more convenient for these batch conversions.

Same version of Handbrake (1.9.2), but I’m not even sure how to check for the ffmpeg version on my NAS, or what Handbrake is using. The system panel in the Handbrake info window doesn’t list ffmpeg at all.

Thanks for the ideas.
GPU does seem to be passed onto the docker container, not only because of the dramatic increase in speed, but also because the CPU isn’t being maxed out like it was before adding the GPU hardware line.
Volumes are bind mounts.
I experimented with permissions and user groups, and noticed no difference to the behaviour in render output.
For these videos, quality isn’t super important, but file size is. I spent most of yesterday tweaking settings on my local Handbrake install to get the right balance. So, I assumed transferring the settings over would give the same results.

The NAS (Synology DS920+):
Laptop (Framework 13 11th Gen intel):
I would expect a difference in speed between the two, but does the hardware affect the output quality/size if the settings are identical?
I just call that “a virus in a different partition”. LOL

And using the app “Identity” (also a Flatpak), comparing the quality differences is suuuuper easy!
Goddamn, I love FOSS!

Ok, you absolutely set me on the right path! I didn’t realize that in Linux (using Flatpak Handbrake), I needed a separate plugin for Quicksync.
I’ve been running tests, and tweaking the profiles, but goddamn is it fast now! Faster than when I was using it in Windows.
Thank you!

Handbreak is really slow, though. For context, in the time it takes handbreak to convert one of these videos, I would have done like 5 or 6 on my smartphone.
Batch conversion is great, though. I just need it to be done in less than an entire day. 😢

I know it can be leveraged, but it’s not nearly as powerful as a dedicated GPU. I was converting in Windows using Intel Quick Sync, but never found it to be “fast”, at least not when compared to my old Samsung phone.
Thanks for the tip, though. I will try to leverage it!

Try shutter its gui for ffmpeg https://www.shutterencoder.com/
This looks nice!
And still I would use av1 or vp9
Reasons?
The videos I’m trying to convert are not the type that I’d need to play through Jellyfin or anything like that. More archival dash cam footage that does need to be accessible. Small size without (much) quality loss is my priority, but I can’t spend 12h a day converting them over. 😵💫

Thanks for sharing. I can finally get off LT.

Yes, Trump has said publicly several times that he would not have won if the elections weren’t rigged.
That said, he didn’t fabricate tens of millions of votes.

And there’s no chance of ever getting pre-Trump America back. You guys voted for this. Twice.
Actions have consequences, and you’re in the “found out” phase.

But, have you disabled any power saving features both from the manufacturer and the OS?
Yes, and all permissions have been granted. I think it’s just buggy as another person posted about similar issues.
I wonder if something like LineageOS would be suitable for you?
I used LineageOS many years ago, but my current phone isn’t well supported by any third-party ROM, and I’m not really interested in changing up the OS until at least after the warranty period is up.

I’ve tried some alternatives but from what I can tell they come with their own, even more glaring issues.
Argh, that’s frustrating to hear. Thanks for the info, though!

Rather unfortunately, my phone doesn’t have good custom ROM support, but I generally don’t have a problem re: worrying about spyware for a few reasons:
That said, I’m happy to hear that LineageOS is still a thing! I was using it many years ago, and I’m sure it’s only gotten better since then.

I appreciate that. All permissions, including the one to display over apps, have all been granted already.
Just now, I was on a call and couldn’t hang up! Literally no phone UI or notification that I could end the call from. 😵

Samsung and Google dialers that come with the phone collect far too much data.
I disable them and use Fossify phone, but it’s not a good app and would like to switch to something more reliable. Stock OnePlus ROM, not rooted.

Windows is free for anyone to use indefinitely… If you’re OK with a persistent watermark.
Why even add a premium to the laptop? Let the user decide to use windows as-is, pay a license, or switch to Linux. 🤭
I seriously only want to have options for sorting when I do a search. That’s the only thing that I need for it to be “perfect”.
