  • Do you know what a memory stack and assembly are?

    If you want code that does assembly operations A, B, and then C, you might be able to accomplish it by scanning loaded memory (or its corresponding binary) for bits that, when translated into assembly, do:

    A

    D

    return

    This set of three instructions is a gadget. In practice, it’s a location in memory.

    And then you find another gadget.

    B

    C

    return

    Then, if you don’t care about D, or D does something irrelevant that won’t screw up what you’re trying to do, or won’t crash the program, you can replace the stack with the addresses of gadgets one and two. When gadget one returns, the stack is popped and then gadget two executes.

    Since the computer did ADBC and D was irrelevant, the system executed your ABC malware and now you win.

    Is finding gadgets that execute actual malware hard? Surprisingly not!

  • And don’t skip the ad nine minutes in, it’s hilarious.

    The TLDR is that the founder is a nervous introverted nerd, so even though it looks like it, he wasn’t intentionally lying when he mentioned things that were going to be in the game. Even taking the interviews into account, what really drove the hype train was the price tag and collector’s edition.

    Yes we all now know that they are “the good guys” because they went back and added a bunch of free stuff to the game. But unfortunately this type of integrity should never be expected in the future, especially from a publicly traded studio who is legally obligated to do what is profitable (which probably means taking the money and running, or adding micro transactions or other things).

    A great comeback story, for sure. And I hope their integrity continues. But keep in mind that Blizzard, Rockstar, and even CDProjektRed have all “fallen”.

  • Thanks to you I finally decided to watch the video of him donut shopping and it didn’t seem that bad. Just some out of touch rich guy struggling to make small talk.

    But nowhere near the level of couch-fucking weird everyone’s been claiming.

    So yeah I guess it would be better if he were a total sociopath and could more convincingly fake excitement during small talk?

    The part that made the video bad wasn’t his behavior, it was how clearly the staff knew it was a meaningless publicity stunt. The staff has enough braincells to know that this guy’s policies, if elected, would do nothing to make their lives better, and that they are just pawns to make him look like he appeals to common folk. This is not something specific to this candidate, but his entire party.

    They should’ve just declined him as a customer, or insisted that no recording at all could be done on their property. That would have sent a clearer message to him, unless you think the existence of this video helps the Kamala campaign because they will overreact to it and add it to the “he’s weird” pile. I agree he’s probably that bad kind of weird (I believe all Republicans are either so rich and selfish it is indistinguishable from being straight up evil, are racist, or being blackmailed) , but I don’t see that being demonstrated in the video.

  • I think their point is that once biology is involved it’s no longer a social construct.

    I also think that people conflate sex and gender and it makes things unnecessarily confusing.

    For sake of argument let’s stick with binary for now.

    There are words that describe sex. There are words that describe gender. And there are words that can be used as a shortcut for a combination of both.

    For example (and if you don’t like my example substitute your own words): a masculine female is often called a tomboy or described as butch.

    TERFs probably feel that the term woman is a shortcut for feminine females, and that those who aren’t female but are feminine are not Champagne, they are sparkling wine. And it’s easy to see why someone would be insulted by that opinion. Strictly speaking, being told “you’re not a woman” isn’t necessarily an attack, or stating that you shouldn’t exist. But yes (obviously!) people with extreme views jump onto that bandwagon and are willing to kill/oppress to make everyone the same cuz they can’t handle weird people.

    Yes, trans people are weird (queer means weird!). But weird isn’t bad, and people who think weird is bad are not people I would want to hang out with, even if they also happen to be trans. Pride is about pride: own your weirdness.
