Probably is still true, but I’ve not been paying close attention to the AI market in the last couple of years. But the point I was trying to make was that it’s an apples to oranges comparison

The cursed Will Smith eating spaghetti wasn’t the best video AI model available at the time, just what was available for consumers to run on their own hardware at the time. So while the rate of improvement in AI image/video generation is incredible, it’s not quite as incredible as that viral video would suggest
Realistically the design goals of a gaming OS vs a general desktop OS aren’t that different. You want to balance performance, batterlife/power consumption, and making sure it withstands insane abuse by users and software doing anything you could never imagine that nobody should have ever tried to do. About the only design goal that separates SteamOS from Windows is fleet manageability features
The oldest vehicle I’ve owned, a 2004 Ford escape couldn’t even make it to 17 years old. The axle snapped due to rust damage. Road salt is so terrible for vehicles, roads and the environment
This is where I’m at too. If I go crazy and start installing stuff natively to experiment I end up with extra stuff auto configured that’s no longer needed and random problems I’m too lazy to figure out how to solve. Flatpak doesn’t do that and I don’t have to worry about that. I can install random stuff to play with and uninstall it cleanly. Some packages need more system access than flatpak gives natively and with those I’ll make the decision of if I want to set it up and tear it down manually or not.
Storage is cheap, my time not so much.
oof that site is pretty bad even with ublock origin. It also hijacks copy/paste so you can’t copy/paste the article to spare others, and any attempt to bypass that gets passed along to extracting the paid article below it rather than giving you the actual text of the article. Oh and it pops up to sign in with google, pops up with a discounted subscription offer, and pops up other animated elements on every edge of the screen (which actually link to real site content!) further making it difficult to just read the damn article
Good news is it literally doesn’t provide any information other than quoting his tweet about laying off his entire dev team and then his linked post from a few weeks later he was looking for devs (and the article quotes random people on reddit to fill it out of course)
I mean frequent consumption is pretty well documented to be bad for your liver, and they don’t call it a beer belly for nothing. Like any kind of indulgence, moderation is key
Also worth noting beer historically was very very light on alcohol, so it was effectively a method of making water safe to drink rather than about having fun getting drunk
Most radiators are just a big metal thing which a hot liquid slowly flows through to radiate the heat into the space. Kinda hard for that to be bad for you unless you burn yourself
Most heated blankets have such a feature
My wife uses on every night, and it’s just a Walmart special no-name brand heating pad. Never had problems with burning even with kids and pets in the mix to really do a number on them
Nah whats a little rapid oxidization between friends?
My wife thought she was the same until suddenly it clicked and she realized she is in fact a gamer
There’s a group called Improv Everywhere that used to do really creative flash mobs like the No Pants Subway ride where they would all claim to have forgotten to put on pants that day, or going into a cafe and lugging 90s desktops in and dialing in, or during the Great Recession they had a suicide jumper on a 2ft high ledge which they dramatically had to talk down.
They once tried to do a “writers against libraries” stunt but it ended up not being funny enough because people kinda went “oh yeah libraries are kinda weird in that they just give out books for free”
Every former windows phone user I have ever talked to has sworn up and down about how amazing of a platform it was. I honestly suspect Microsoft could have legitimately won a sizable slice of the mobile market if they simply chose a different name than “windows phone”
But then, this is the same company which held a mock funeral for the iPhone upon the launch of the Windows phone so…uh…yeah that actually happened…
I mean, the person who did it did technically manage it by running an emulator of a different similarly ancient architecture
Ars has a decent summary of the blog post if you don’t feel like reading the full blog post
No joke I read an article a while ago about a computer cafe in like Nepal I think it was? where users had to pedal a small DC generator to power the computers because power is so scarce up on the mountain
It’s more than just a TPM requirement. They have actual processor requirements cutting off all 7th gen and older Intel processors and all 2nd gen? Ryzen and older AMD processors so that they can modernize instruction sets. Many perfectly capable if a bit old machines that have years of life left in them that will be going to the recycler who will attempt to extract something of value from these machines.
I’m all for modernizing instruction sets and cutting off literal ewaste machines that nobody should still be using like the Core 2 Duo for example, but this is just going to produce mountains of ewaste, which is about the last thing we need with the looming climate apocalypse and dire need significantly reduce emissions rapidly
I was very confused by your comment so I took a poke around Intel ark. I see what you mean now, most mobile processors for 4th and 6th gen (probably the most common generations for used PCs that are incompatible with 11) have 2c/4t on the U series processors, but looks like any HQ processor gets a full 4 cores and if it’s an i7 it gets hyper threading, putting them closer to parity with their desktop counterparts
I literally daily drive a laptop with a 4c/8t processor (6700-HQ) so I’m not sure what you’re talking about other than perhaps the lower end i5s
Edit to add, my other laptop with a third gen i5 is getting pretty long in the tooth though, so I wouldn’t go out of my way for something that old though
Holy shit did it really take me 20 years to realize the humor in “WinCE”?
