Man, with the Linux users on one side and daddy Microsoft high on the cloud, C: don’t get no respect!

Seeing that face and the quote “Don’t get in my way… I will run right over you” I literally checked to make sure it wasn’t the onion before browsing the comments.

Linux Mint is probably the perfect educational OS to switch to like that. I’m assuming most people are coming from Windows, are mouse+gui only, and are not used to being their own admin and installing all the basics like Firefox and libreoffice.

But it’s still Linux, so the user friendliness doesn’t mean you are locked out from going on tech or customization deep dives. Daily terminal user here, still love me some mint.

I have to assume that headline is written to be palatable to Trumper clicks or something.

Looked unbeatable on the economy? And I’m supposed to take the author seriously as an educated adult human who professionally writes words about important things? As far as I could gather from a glance at the article, him being “unbeatable” was that he promised to magically fix all economic woes and people believed him. Again. So that makes it a strong issue for the GOP if you are dead inside and trying to write the news like everything is normal.

Multiple 24hr all-news channels + produced as an entertainment & engagement product + people thinking that what smart informed people do is watch the news channel all the damned time. It all adds up to this crap we have today.

As I get older I have found that making my world smaller and focusing on the things I genuinely care about (and not the things I’m “supposed to” care about as a “good” man/American/worker etc) results in me being happier and more satisfied with life.

Lemmy is my close little corner of the internet. I hope that the fediverse grows ands takes over for the good of other people, but if it stays in this niche for another decade I’ll be happy because I already love it for what it is.

If you are the “computer person” in your family, you probably have experience screwing with, breaking, and fixing whatever OSes you have used over the years.

The refreshing difference with Linux is that the software and the people who created it are not trying to prevent you from doing what you want with your computer.

I use mint on two different machines with Nvidia GPUs. One is a several year old desktop with a 1080 and the other is a two year old Dell laptop with a discrete nvidia GPU in addition to the Intel one on the processor.

Now granted I don’t play a ton of games right now, and when I do they usually aren’t cutting edge, but I don’t recall many problems so far. I use NVENC for Jellyfin and editing videos more often, and that has been pretty smooth. The one issue I had was related to that though. Kdenlive (flatpak) updated and could no longer export videos because it was looking for a newer version of something my mint-supplied nvidia driver wasn’t yet updated to have.

Trying to install a newer driver manually was a whole damn thing though, so I rolled back the kdenlive flatpak to the one that worked.

That first reply highlights a major difference in how people approach the world.

Speaking very generally, conservatism and right wing politics seen to attract those who see everything as a competition and that dominating other people is what it means to be a good person. Funny that it also leads to frustrated, angry, isolated people.

So if we want to switch to using a website that doesn’t promote hurting/killing 2% of the population, we are now BOWING DOWN to the minority some of us would not rather murder.

It’s the same reason they hate DEI so much.

However the details of this pan out, the timing of this news is beautiful. It’s right there alongside the headline in my feed about the Windows 11 market share going down.

And it’s not about being anti-Microsoft, it’s just that the market conditions are great for cementing Linux as an expected place to release your games. And I personally love seeing VR as part of it.

Oh is this an excuse to hop on the Mint praise train? Don’t mind if I do!

For me it was smoother than windows to install, it runs much better moment to moment (it’s like the people that made it were worried about making nice software rather than the business goals being pushed by their managers), and most importantly the fact that it is the “beginner” distro doesn’t compromise its capabilities. I am in the terminal all day every day and I use the machine to work on software for embedded Linux systems.

¿Por Qué No Los Dos?

You can just use a graphical file manager in Linux like you might have been used to in Windows. When I open mine I see my windows partition and my USB drive listed on the left side.

I know Mint has one that I use all the time, but I’m not familiar with what’s in Ubuntu out of the box.

Of course there are, because mining and construction are powered by the old stuff. That doesn’t seem like a compelling downside to building things that generate clean power, since that’s a downside to building literally anything.

At first I wanted to reply about how one can HOPE that capitalism’s never ending extraction of value from labor might build a better future and enable more happiness.

But there’s a deeper assumption in that statement, and in my limited personal experience it affects conservatives the most. That is thinking that happiness is caused by external factors: money, toys, status, power, etc.

How wonderful would it be if the ultimate effect of the AI was to use the tech industry’s billions to install tons of carbon free power generation?

I’m using Linux mint all day at work, while I have a couple of rarely-used Windows machines at home. I think the swap to Linux on those home machines is going to be a winter project this year.

It might be more accurate to say the project will be setting up the Linux version of a few key pieces of software. The actual installation of Linux Mint is the easiest part!

I have to admit that one does look really good too.

I have a couple of old windows machines at home, so eventually (maybe as a winter project) I’ll need to decide if I want to try some other distros long term.

I absolutely love Linux mint. I use it daily for dev work, but I’d also install it on my mother’s old laptop so she could keep using Facebook on it or whatever.
