Last I heard is that he compiles the kernel on an AMD machine (with a threadripper iirc), so he also has a beefy desktop.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are the modern design trends you hate most?
261·7 months ago-
Rounded corners. Everywhere. They lose so much space, especially on small screens, and everything feels crammed.
-
No personalization anywhere. You used to be able to completely customize social media profiles, to the point of editing your page’s CSS directly.
-
Modern OSes (except linux or BSD based ones which are not android) also have no color or personalization. You usually have the slabs of white on light mode, or the slabs of blak on dark mode, with only one color you can choose for some details.
-
JavaScript animations on every. Single. Website. I have an old phone (because I don’t like modern stuff), and it struggles with almost every modern, animated site. Is it really necessary to add all that js and animations?
-
No headphone jacks or expandable storage on modern phones. It probably costs cents to add those features. I know phones don’t usually have expandable storage because it makes you buy a new one once you fill all your storage, and I know they don’t have audio jacks because it makes you buy the company’s wireless headphones, but I need those features in my phone.

Why does everything have to be a web app now? Have people forgotten about actual softwate, that you own, that doesn’t need internet to work, that uses almost no resources and is faster and has more features than a web app? We got everything backward. Sites that should be webs like reddit will ask you to download their apps, while microsoft will try to code Word in javascript and sell it to you as an “upgrade”.

I hate subscriptions with passion, especially for software.
-
This is true, especially for games. But for some reason, even though some compatibility features have been removed from windows, others still remain. Hell, if you look into System32, you can still find the dialer app from windows 95 (still with its original icon, btw!), or Windows Vista’s “bubbles” screensaver, and they still run.
Edit: this is not a windows praise, it’s a critique. Those parts are dead weight, and windows isn’t even that good at offering compatibility for old software

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Who are some people in powerful positions or 1%ers that are genuinely good people?
2·8 months agoWhat Gates is doing right now is a massive publicity stunt to make people believe he’s actually a “good person”. He is not. He is still a disgusting billionaire that contradicts everything he preaches.
-
He is constantly buying farmland, to the point where he’s the biggest land owner in the whole US. This is seriously harming small farmers.
-
He preaches about climate change and using cardboard straws while in his massive ($650M!) mega yacht
-
The “humanitarian/healthcare” stuff he did, while helpful, was only done because he could use it as a tax writeoff. He wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t the case.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you could only have 1GB of entertainment data, what would it be?
2·1 year agoI’ve gotten the shrek movie to fit in under 25 MiB. You probably can easily fit the whole 4 movies and leave some space for books if you know how to compress video well.

2·1 year agoFish are not real. Salmon is a kind of bird.
What people commonly refer to as “fish” are in fact government spy drones designed to detect and stop seaweed smuggling.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What stupidly easy tech solution do people gloss over all of the time?
5·1 year agoI think they meant it like “I prefer ethernet more than wifi”

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a piece of technology you LOVE the progress of?
6·1 year agoYou know the funniest thing? Smartphone charging has been made much more powerful in the last years. Now, instead of 10W, they can seep 80W and charge really fast.
However, due to smartphones also using way more power than before and having way bigger batteries, all those improvements are completely offset.
I have a phone from 2017 and another one from 2023. Both take the same time to charge, and the new one needs a 40W brick, while the old one is happy charging on a 2.5W computer PSU. But the old phone lasts longer than the new one!
I use Arch, btw
(sorry)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What household item do you wish there was a trial/testing period for?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are something you immediately took for granted and were surprised about?
6·1 year agoOh, for me it’s the opposite way. I’ve never had problems with AUX, the cable was always there in the car and I also used to always carry one with me.
When cars started having bluetooth, the aux port disappeared, and I never managed to have the same experience of just “connect and go”. Sometimes headphones take over your bluetooth mid drive because the lid opened accidentally, sometimes it disconnects for no reason at all. If someone has google auto connected, nobody else can connect the bluetooth to play their music. And it drains battery way faster than AUX.
I wish cars included both options, but for some reason they completely forgot about the AUX.
I’ve never tried the controlled temperature seats though, I’ll have to try those. The idea certainly sounds good.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What would happen if you spray a bucket with hydrophobic spray and put water in it?
6·1 year agoBasically the same thing as when you fill a non-stick pan with water. Hydrophobic coatings only repel water in a way so that it doesn’t stick to the surface. That’s why they use hydrophobic coatings on windshields, so the droplets of water slide easily and quickly.
Granted, the effect is more noticeable with hydrophobic coating than with non-stick coating, but if you were expecting the water to visibly float away from the walls, that won’t happen with either. Reality is sometimes disappointing, huh?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some good software suggestions for windows?
2·1 year agoThat’s an example, but you mentioned it yourself. The BSDs aren’t Linux.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•My brother claims that Vanguard for League can do the same to gaming PCs that install it as CrowdStrike did to businesses who installed that, is this true? Does Vanguard have as much access/power?
3·1 year agoLook up that one genshin fuck up on the internet. Their kernel anticheat was used by ransomware to completely take control of people’s PCs. Best part? You didn’t even need to have genshin installed, because the AC was bundled with the ransomware, and Windows would install it as it was “trusted software”

The number is the signal you send to the program. There’s a lot of signals you can send (not just 15 and 9).
The difference between them is that 15 (called SIGTERM) tells the program to terminate by itself (so it can store its cached data, create a save without losing data or corrupting, drop all its open connections gracefully, etc). 9 (called SYGKILL) will forcefully kill a program, without waiting for it to properly close.
You normally should send signal 15 to a program, to tell it to stop. If the program is frozen and it’s not responding or stopping, you then send signal 9 and forcefully kill it. No signal is “better” than the other, they just have different usecases.
