  • I just got a Lenovo T14 Gen 1 with a Ryzen 7 4750U (I think that’s around 11th gen on Intel?), 16GB soldered RAM as well as an open slot to add more, 14" screen (on the larger side of your wishlist, I know), and it was $300US on eBay. It’s been fine with Linux Mint running Cinnamon as my daily driver right now, and also fine with other related OSs like vanilla Debian and Ubuntu. Have not tried with Arch, btw, but these T-series machines have a pretty good reputation as far as I know in terms of Linux ease-of-use.

  • He was wrongly deported, in this case, at least as I understand it. He is from El Salvador. You have the right energy though, because most of the people they are saying they “deported” are supposedly Venezuelan nationals and have, to your point, been human trafficked.

Edit: this was a controversial take. I maybe wasn’t careful with my words enough, which is my bad, but also I think most people probably agree there is a difference between what happened to Abrego Garcia (while still very fucked up) and what happened to an even larger set of people that have been largely existing in the shadow of this and other higher profile cases. A whole slew of people got kidnapped and shipped to a country they had never even seen before (the same amount of fucked up as before, but then with extra sauce and seasoning of the worst kind) and will never leave. They’ll die on foreign dirt. They’ll get put in an unmarked mass grave, maybe. Or maybe not be given a burial at all. And that has emotional consequences, sometimes on a spiritual level, for loved ones. These folks are ALL being wronged in irreparable ways. I only meant to try and point out a still-important difference between the one case everyone posts about and the hundreds of others that have an extra element of cruelty baked into them.

Do not let this person split up a bill for your restaurant party, folks

(I’m only joking, but I think you did the math the wrong way, $500x12=$6k)

Edit: yep.I’m an idiot, thanks folks, my poor example will stand as a testament to others, don’t shame yourself publicly like this and pay attention in school!

  • Propublica just continues to put out great journalism. It seems crazy, but there is a part of this article that is basically a side note and simultaneously is also illuminating about another issue on the public mind recently:

But there was also an Ohio OB-GYN on the national board of directors — he used to work for the Cleveland Clinic, I discovered, and now led a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group. The doctor was joined at board meetings by a city prosecutor in Utah, an ex-city council member and, Williams was later told, a sergeant with an Illinois sheriff’s department. (The doctor did not respond to requests for comment. He has since left his post with the UnitedHealth subsidiary, a spokesperson for the company said.)

This is the calibre of doctors that UHC apparently relies on to inform them how to best “enhance profits” by denying “unnecessary care”, and it’s not remotely surprising at this point.
