Privacy@lemmy.ml•Why do podcasts have preroll ads now?
6·1 year agoPodcasts partner up with ad providers. They inject ads into the episodes depending on several factors, including your location. The podcast has some say and can for example exclude some topics like politics. That catches most, but an ad can also be misrepresented and slip through.
I use Antennapod as well and they have nothing to do with it. They just download episodes from RSS feeds provided from other services.
You could use a VPN server in a smaller country. If the ad market is very small, there simply might be no ads to serve you.
I can also recommend using a swiss VPN server. The funny swiss dialect makes it hilarious.

2·1 year agoAccording to this discussion, you can apply your Wayland settings to SDDM from the system settings.
Edit: Although some users reporting issues with it, but worth a try.

Games@sh.itjust.works•GOG: When we said we let you ‘own’ your games, we meant that no matter what happens you’ll still be able to play them thanks to our offline installers.English
162·1 year agoThanks for saying this.
With recent campaigns and rants against digital media, people often claim that “you own the game if you buy a physical copy”. That always makes me sigh, because it’s false.
Not saying there are some advantages for some use cases, but I dislike hyperbole and untruths.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Switching from a Media Drive to my first self-build NASEnglish
2·1 year agoAs for migration, you might be able to create a degraded pool initially, copy over the data, and add the parity disk last.
I actually asked in the TrueNAS forum about this idea. According to some knowledgeable users this might work. For anyone interested, details here. The next major release (planned for end of October), should make this easier.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Gamescom Showed Me That Devs Really Care About Steam Deck Compatibility - Steam Deck HQDeutsch
13·1 year agoAMD recently launched their 9000 series CPUs. Most reviews showed lackluster performance. Except for Linux. Turns out it was a Windows problem that will be fixed with the next release. Initial tests show big gains depending on the game.
Microsoft is selling Windows as the gaming platform. It’s just marketing. And it’s crumbling just a little bit. I hope this will at least lead to parity with Linux.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Replacing M.2 system drive (btrfs) on motherboard with single slotEnglish
1·1 year agoDo you have pci-e slots?
I had to decide between a M.2 enclosure and a PCIe card. Since I plan to build a new system (with more M.2 slots) I will have more slots in the future. And maybe I will not like the M.2 enclosure and return it. wink

Linux@lemmy.ml•Replacing M.2 system drive (btrfs) on motherboard with single slotEnglish
4·1 year agoThen you’d better install it from scratch and have a clean, shiny and new system.
You know how it is, I just got my system right. Of course lots of settings can just be duplicated, but I would prefer not to set up some systemd services, cron jobs, etc. again.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•I did it finally, deleted win10 and installed Linux MintEnglish
4·1 year agoI love that I just download the app from the dedicated place, no pointless web surfing for the latest versions.
IMO this is a huge thing, Linux actually does a lot better than Windows. I know the Windows Store exists, but it is lacking in lots of ways.

4·1 year agoThat’s encouraging, 3ven though these models are out of my price range.
I’m planning to build a new system pretty soon. With Intel 13 an 14th Gen woes, AMD CPU releases and upcoming (Septmber) AM5 Motherboards, my planning is in constant flux.

Technology@lemmy.world•NATO Member Sweden Says Russia Disrupting Its Satellite NetworksEnglish
0·2 years agoI think it’s hilarious that western leaders are worried about provoking Russia by providing Ukraine with weaponry that can be used in Russian territory.
Russia is at war with us. It’s not tanks, fighter jets and battleships. It’s cyber warfare, disinfomation campaigns, bribing of right wing politicians and poisonings. Just because nobody wants to call it a war, doesn’t make it go away.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Can anyone recommend a lightweight, stable distro for a thinkpad?
2·2 years agoIf you got a Nvidia dGPU I recommend PopOS. It gave me the best energy options and ability to switch between iGPU and dGPU out of the box. It even found new firmware for my T480 and installed it without a hitch.
