Oh I get that but that would mean I would have an Intel CPU as well. No. I’m fine getting an intel dGPU but not an intel CPU. Even if I end up with a Ryzen CPU and throwing the Intel GPU in a pcie v4 slot that still plenty for this.

I wouldn’t mind an ARM build for some of this but they are expensive and not supported by mainline OPNsense so if I’m going to be spending all this money on it, it should be able to streams games too, replacing multiple power hungry devices. And ARM can’t do that.

  • I am thinking a Ryzen with lots of cores I just pin shit to and an Intel GPU for most things. Supposedly there is work going into SR-IOV support on battlemage but it’s not out yet. The 9000X Ryzen chips supposedly have iGPUs on them too so I wonder if I could throw them at frigate. The encoder just can’t be done on the CPU because AMD has by far the worst encoders, though I’ve heard the new AV1 encoders aren’t terrible.

I want to avoid Intel CPUs. I also don’t generally need transcoding for my setup but want the option and aside from Apple, Intel has the best encoders out there right now. AMD has better rendering GPUs but they have historically had absolutely terrible encoders. Nvidia is not getting my business. They can fuck right off.

  • I have a family plan with T-Mobile for years with friends and a family member on it. T-Mobile had a price lock guarantee on it. They raised the prices anyway. When I called about it they told me they made that promise 11 years ago so it doesn’t count. I told the lady on the phone “I pay you X dollars a month so me and my friends can look at porn and cat videos on skinner boxes.” I’m still looking for somewhere to jump ship to. Mint mobile looks like an option but they are owned by T-Mobile so I dunno if that’s really an option.

  • We are getting to the point where inviting more people in means we will need an automated babysitter to watch for this shit and to pull it once it’s discovered. Apple has a walled garden approach that’s certainly taken a big chunk of malware threats out of their devices but their walled garden approach is ridiculous and impractical for Linux. The Microsoft method of monitoring and second guessing everything with antimalware programs is also suspect because it is super easy to abuse and resource intensive. We have clamAV but clam kinda sucks.

Linux is at the point where we need something that audits what’s going in and automatically yanks it back out remotely if it’s found to be a problem. Things can only be added by the user, but the bot can remove them without interaction of the user.

I don’t see this happening though. Instead, I see this as more of a rust vs C thing all over again, where valid critiques are drowned out by “improve your skills bro.”
