  • I highly recommend you watch one of the free video courses, from the beginning, on youtube.

GIMP is a really sophisticated piece of software designed for maximum technical control and flexibility. If you can dedicate a few hours to learning it you can do basically anything, for free, forever. If you only need to do basic stuff it might be worth looking at something else like Tux Paint for example, which is faster to pick up. It also has sound effects and is great fun.

  • I had that in the beginning too. Once you’re used to the basics you’ll find that most of what you’ve learnt does transfer though.

I think part of the problem, at least for me coming from 20 years on photoshop, was searching for “how do I do this advanced technique in GIMP” before learning the basic layout/structure/tools etc.

YMMV but I highly recommend watching an hour or two of an introductory GIMP course. It’s what made it click for me.

  • Is this for yourself?

A few months ago I thought about doing some workshops or presentations in my local area and asked a similar question about whether anyone had already put together something cohesive and as simple as possible but I couldn’t find anything that quite fit the bill.

Maybe there is something already out there but if anyone wants to collaborate on making something let me know.
