Fediverse@lemmy.world•How many instances have you been orphaned from?English
1·2 months agoTwo: lemm.ee and a PixelFed instance whose name I am blanking on rn.
It’s OK, I learned how to migrate and moved to PieFed, so win-win. 👍

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is a good self-hosted solution for sharing files with friends?English
1·3 months agoYou can consider using a Pikapods service for this. It’s dead simple to strand up a server when you need one.

They have Gokapi and/or PrivateBin for just about a buck per month. You can turn the service on and off whenever you like. Good company to work with, IME, too.

3·4 months agoSame. Except I still have to keep that garbage dump OS on my work laptop. I would not be surprised to find rooms filled with bonobo chimps, hammering away at keyboards inside their offices, “working on updates”.

14·6 months agoYep, understood. And I still don’t think this is a common skill for most 18 year olds. But I’d like to know if this is more common than I realize.

38·6 months agoI’m 8-10 years from retirement and I’m fine with this. I always knew younger, better coders will come along. Anyone holding on to their 90s or 00s coding skills… Well… Good luck with that.
That, and this kid is still the very rare exception. I don’t think he’s representative of most 18 year olds.

I don’t really understand what I am seeing here, so I have to ask – are these Security issues a concern?
https://github.com/TecharoHQ/anubis/security
I have a server running a few tiny web sites, so I am considering this, but I’m always concerned about the possibility that adding more things to it could make it less secure, versus more. Thanks for any thoughts.
