The irony of the background saying Restore Sanity
They are problems for them… even if they want to pretend those problems are hoaxes.
It seems to mostly be replacing work that is both repetitive and pointless. I have it writing my contract letters, ‘executive white papers’, and proposals.
The contract letters I can use without edit. The white papers I need to usually redirect it, but the second or third output is good. The proposals it functionally does the job I’d have a co-op do… put stuff on paper so I can realize why it isn’t right, and then write to that. (For the ‘fluffy’ parts of engineering proposals, like the cover letters, I can also use it.)
I looked at this awhile ago. There is a google doc maintained by some anti-Tesla investors who track every fire that can find. It is still much lower than the US average fires per car.
I think it gets more attention because:
The advice I’ve been given (on train/bus batteries) is to shove the vehicle if safe when it starts; then do whatever possible to fully submerge in fresh water. Obviously that isn’t really feasible.
Credit where it is due though… they could have remained silent and probably taken no flak… so good on them.
Their big request seems to be to make sure people are aware when a phone is fixed with off-brand parts. This also makes sense to me. Some portion of off brand parts will cause problems, which may show up as complaints back to or about Apple.
(An example: we have a system trained to map rail territory using head-end video using some visual odometery and 2010-era AI. A specific client has cameras that we can’t process well because of weird subtle artifacts. Apple is doing much more complicated stuff than we are.)
Not for their argument they can’t.
They seem to have been arguing about the non-disclosure to the public/Trump, not the actual delivery of the tweets.
If they’d delivered the tweets/drafts, they would have complied with no downside, and still been able to fight the non-disclosure. (Or just do what they did anyway, and tell people about it)
And blast the whole planet with radiation? Are you crazy?
I’m just going to sit over here in my fiscally conservative and socially liberal corner.
(Although, I’m good with some level of safety nets still)
So I’ve been in discussions like this for equipment on trains. It functionally goes:
You paid for X. The hardware we plan to use for faster build supports X+Y. You can either:
I actually agree with the options prevented above. I just think that, as the owner, you should still have the right to reverse item 2 if you can figure out how. Especially if it’s out of warranty.
Just hacked together python scripts.
Pip install openapi-core
It is possible to get coherent output from them though. I’ve been using the ChatGPT API to successfully write ~20 page proposals. Basically give it a prior proposal, the new scope of work, and a paragraph with other info it should incorporate. It then goes through a section at a time.
The numbers and graphics need to be put in after… but the result is better than I’d get from my interns.
I’ve also been using it (google Bard mostly actually) to successfully solve coding problems.
I either need to increase the credit I giver LLM or admit that interns are mostly just LLMs.
Apple and other companies with web browsers are probably our biggest hope. People will complain if websites just ‘stop working’ one day because of their browser choice.
That said, I’m probably fooling myself. PECO.com, a huge electric company, doesn’t work unless I’m in incognito mode. I think it fails if you are signed into another corporation’s Microsoft 365 account. But they don’t seem to care.
I guess, but somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of people already use ad blockers. It’s not a small segment of the population. Even more people use some sort of plugin.
I think it is more likely that certain sites require secure mode; just like today. I guess I could be wrong, and most sites will end up doing it. I still suspect there will be a work around; even if it is as complicated as a secure browser being run in a virtual machine and then AI removing the ads to show you the ‘clean’ version.
I am confused by why everyone thinks this is a big threat?
What stops the FOSS community from just continuing to allow ad blockers and other webpage editing features?
I guess it depends what the client things the right tool for the job is. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail
Because the models don’t support your statement.
Billions WILL have worse lives due to this. A very small subset of that will be because they are on the verge of starving.
I think this conflates capitalism with lack of coordination. We could fix global warming today via regulation. Even if our government was socialist, it would probably still not be curbing emissions due to trying to achieve some other non-capital goal.
Second, there isn’t any need to falsely imply our species is going to die because of climate change. No model points at that. Billions of people having crappier lives and dying sooner should be enough motivation.

(Seriously, agree with you in general though)
Yeah. We can’t have free, privacy, and creators that eat. Pick two.
(We might end up paying and getting neither privacy or paid creators… but at least it is worth the attempt to do things right.)
I don’t understand why this article isn’t BS. It was meant to prevent passive snooping. If I connect to a network, it needs to know who I am.
I’ve worked with companies that implement this type of tech for monitoring road traffic congestion. IOS reduced the number of ‘saw same phone twice and can calculate speed’
