  • There’s been a decent amount of discussion online that when you are already in a relationship, you’ve been “vetted” so to speak. Obviously bullshit, as what your current partner may find acceptable can have jack to do with what anyone else finds acceptable. Also, if you have a break up, somehow you’re no longer vetted because clearly you have some problems if you had a break up.

It’s all pretty/petty bullshit but it’s definitely a thing. Even my clueless ass has noticed it. Women are more comfortable around me now that I’m obviously taken (wedding ring). Not that they weren’t before, but diving into deep/private conversation stuff at a far faster rate. Like I pride myself on being trustworthy and a good listener, but you gotta chill.

That increased comfort also includes more comfortable to make passes at me. No thanks, wife and I aren’t looking for a third.

  • I bring this point up every time I see someone pushing the idea of P2P or federated social networks with no moderation and no one has a solution for it yet. Because there isn’t a solution.

It’s like these people don’t even want to look at existing social media with minimal moderation. It doesn’t take long on 4chan and other less reputable *chan style sites to see that no matter how much you want to shake off the chains of overbearing moderators, there is a bare minimum moderation necessary for any social media to survive.

Even social media sites on TOR have moderation.

When even the darkest, least moderated cesspools online still have some minimal moderation, it should be a massive neon sign that there needs to be some moderation functionality.

  • This really comes across as if you just keep shifting so that you can continue finding something to complain about. It’s ok to just not like having your camera on man. Not everything has to be the kicking off point for a sociological or anthropological study.

Backgrounds visible? It forces you to have your space display worthy!

Backgrounds blurred? Everyone knows your place isn’t display worthy and thinks you’re a disgusting pig!

Company provided background images? Corporate endorsed removal of individualism!

What you’ve touched on here is part of the intent. Not that they want to erase individuals, but that in general a more controlled corporate image is seen as more professional.

If you want to talk about how/why that’s a thing, be my guest, but that has nothing to do with video conferencing. Work dress code and even work uniforms have existed for generations.

  • It’s definitely not for everyone, but the begining does an absolutely shit job of selling the game’s depth and the more interesting bits about the setting.

As you progress through the game you have vastly different landscape types where “hold forward and don’t tip over” isn’t enough to make it through. River deltas, canyons, mountains with and without snow, swamps, craggy wasteland strewn with boulders, open plains with enemy camps, forests, etc. You also get a decent variety of tools to use to tackle those challenges, and multiple ways to approach each one.

Do I skirt around the edges of the terrorist camp or try to speed through on a motorcycle? Should I try to defeat them to make the area easier for a while? What tools do I need to get through the terrain on the outskirts? How many ladders and climbing ropes? How am I going to carry that all with the cargo and deliver it within the time limit? What do I need to defeat them? Can I? Should I do that while I carry the cargo, risking it? Should I clear it before I take on the delivery? Should I take the time to build a zipline network and then come back later when I can just zipline through? Is there enough bandwidth for buildings that I can afford a zipline network? Should I grind out some other delivery destinations to unlock more bandwidth? Maybe I should repair the highways in the area instead and drive through? How do I get the resources I need for building this stuff? Will I do repeatable deliveries for the materials, scavenge them from lost cargo in dangerous places, fight the terrorists and take theirs? Do I take on extra difficult delivery conditions (time, cargo damage) for higher rewards? How do I deal with those additional requirements?

But again, the game does a piss poor job of demonstration any of this depth off from the begining. It also does a terrible job signposting how and when you unlock more tools. So you can grind shit out the hard way, then do one mission for someone different (that you could have done the whole time) and unlock something that would have made the grind half as difficult. Shit didn’t really “click” for me until more than 20 hours in, which is pretty unforgivable.

For anyone thinking about playing or picking it up again, my advice:

Get the deluxe edition. It has a bunch of seemingly minor QoL additions in terms of new equipment and some added functionality for old ones that make a ton of difference.

Slam through the starting area. Unless you really want to grind, just do the main quest path and ignore the side stuff. You can come back later with gear that will keep it from being such a slog. This would have cut down my “20 hours until it clicked” by a ton.

After you take the boat to the second map, you can take things slower. I reccomend focusing on the main quests until you unlock each new “hub”, then do as much side content as you’re interested in. On the second map the game does a better job of indicating the story sections in advance that you might want to grind out side content to be better prepared for.

Most of all, don’t treat Death Stranding like a normal game that’s meant to entertain and keep you hanging on for the next beat. It’s a slow, contemplative game while you grind out sidequests. I mostly play it to relax. Put a video up on my second monitor, or listen to a podcast, and deliver shit.

  • By keeping the bank from bankrupting you and garnishing your wages. The bank will happily take money from your accounts without your consent when the government comes asking for it. They will also take money from any accounts you may be cosigned on (my parents got so late on bills that the bank drained my account when I was a minor living with them, and there is no legal recourse for this).

Pretty hard to effect change when you can’t buy food because the government came by and took all your money out from under you.

Look. You’ve been provided advice towards what options are available to you. If you choose not to take that advice and to make this the hill you choose to die on, the government and the bank won’t hesitate to assist you with the choice to ruin your life over this.

Feel free to debate philosophy with the bank and the government. I’m out.

  • You have vitally missed my point. I’m not arguing that it’s something we should be happy about or not trying to change, just that it is something that is.

Unfortunately, we are required to exist in the world that is, rather than the world that should be. You have to survive in reality to be able to make changes to it.

You’re more than welcome to call up your loan provider and tell them you don’t accept the terms you already signed up for. Let us all know how that goes.
