Well, the modern A1 Abrams has ablative armor so that is one way. The new Abrams-X that is currently being developed has a chain gun with advanced AI assisted firing systems that can apparently hit a moving target over a mile away while moving at max speed. I’m no military simp, but I would be downright terrified if I was a Russian tank unit on the battlefield going against an M2A1 Abrams let alone the Abrams-X.
I’ve heard that the next development for tanks, to defend against tandem warheads, is “active protection”, a system similar to the Phalanx CIWS, but smaller/lighter. That is: You need something that can detect and shoot down the incoming missile before it hits.
