Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama all are advancing bills that "define sex" to exclude transgender people from any legal recognition of their gender.
Just because ass backwards shithole states run by conservatives are taking steps backwards, doesn’t mean that other states haven’t taken steps forwards. I say this as a trans person who has been out for a decade. I’ve seen significant progress in my own state and on online communities. The people who are coming out now have much better resources than I ever did (and I’m happy for that!). When I first came out, the ONLY information about trans people was found on crossdressing fetish sites, and insurance wouldn’t even humor transition related care.
