If you try to read a transcript of a trump speech…

I feel bad for the people who have to add the punctuation.

I know this guy at work who in casual conversation said he doesn’t really follow any news. In another conversation he said he thinks trump should win because he would be the best for the economy and biden is tanking the economy… I tried to point out, that the economy wouldn’t matter all that much if the president is leaking the countries nuclear secrets to our enemies and doing project 2025 stuff, but he had no context and so he didn’t seem to believe me.

I would just tell him he has no idea about the health of the economy, or what either politician would do to help it, because he doesn’t watch news.

If you want to be proud of ignorance, I get to proudly not give your opinion any weight.

Not surprised, the right are very effective at propaganda online. Also it dosen’t help that Biden is aiding a genocide

The problem is most people get their news from fucking YouTube for some reason. Everyone at my work conservosphere gets their news from fucking YouTube or NewsMaxx

YouTube pushes hard right, too. It doesn’t even seem to matter what you watch, it’ll start heading in that direction super fast.

Yeah I noticed that too. I was trying to find a video about the reality of trans youth lives with testimonies and such and all I could find were angry conservatives spewing hate about trans people

Everyone says this and I’m sure it’s true but my anecdotal experience is that it knows I’m lefty and recommends me similar content as a result. Maybe it’s because I have autoplay off.

This is my experience also, the algorithm is terrible at throwing my subscriptions into my recommended but I don’t think it ever throws right wing stuff in there.

Do you ever look at conservative stuff for fun? I watch a video of Jordan Peterson or something linked to from lefty reddit and boom, algorithm ruined.

It is the fucking algorithm. I’ve been active on YouTube since it started. I’ve had a Gmail account since it was in invite only beta. It’s safe to say they know about my political leanings at this point. Yet, I still get hard right content in shorts all the fucking time no matter how much I block it, or dislike it. It’s crazy…

I’m convinced shorts just feeds you 80% random unrelated videos, the shorts algorithm is actually so garbage. It’a probably just that the creators making shorts are very skewed because they pump out hundreds vs others who make one to none a week.

So that’s what people keep telling me will happen, but I watched a More Perfect Union video once and now my recommendations are completely clogged with urban planning and union organization things (I’m primarily a watcher of edu-tainment things, e.g. sci show, CGP Grey, Knowing better, etc)

They know it’s happening. They’re responsible for it. At this point I don’t see much of a difference if they intended this or not.

Fuck, is that the problem, really?

I look for sources. If I can’t find a good one I look for multiple sources that are reporting the same story.

I’m not even THAT thorough or critical. We’re in deep trouble.

Clearly you are thorough / critical though. People nowadays see something on Facebook or Youtube and just take it as fact.

As someone who considers myself pretty well-informed compared to the average American… I do not usually seek multiple sources. You’re in like the 0.1% of being well-informed, unfortunately.

      Yes!!!

An old friend of mine turned into an Andrew Tate fan because it YouTube algorithms. When I try to show him evidence of his wrongdoings I can barely find a fucking source in Google and YouTube. It’s maddening. It’s like being gaslit by the internet.

Yeah they need to go back to getting their news from Fox or a Murdoch paper!

YT is not the problem, there is good quality reporting on YT, fuck almost far better than in traditional corporate owned traditional media.

The problem is right wing sources, be they paper, television, or online.
