The headline is not doing constitutional democracy and the rule of law any favors by making casual readers think they have that power, which (sorry to be all technical, NYT) they do not have.
Don’t believe for a second congressional Republicans are going to “awaken.” We’re well past that. More fear just will make them cower and grovel even harder.
They were already so spineless at two impeachments that they refused to save themselves or us from this, when salvation from Trump was served to them on a silver platter - they’re weak, pathetic lumps of misshapen ego.
Oh come on.
So what about the Democrats, I asked? “They hate us and won’t accept us. And if they don’t change their attitude, Trump and MAGA will keep winning.”
That was echoed by former Republican congressman Joe Walsh, who regularly speaks out about this. “If there’s not room for center-right former Republicans in today’s Democratic Party, then today’s Republican Party will remain victorious and our democracy will disappear,” Walsh told me.
Most of us will accept you. Just stop being awful people. It isn’t hard.
Tim Walz got it. It’s a shame they kneecapped his normal-people messaging.
I agree, but in context he was just extending a metaphor that treated the voters/citizens as “owners,” presumably because he thought Trump would understand the language better.
“As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale. We’re sitting in one right now,” Carney told Trump. “Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign last several months, it’s not for sale. Won’t be for sale, ever,” he said.

Also, there’s absolutely no indication that Americans want to be working at poverty wages in an assembly plant. None of this makes sense even if it “worked.”
It’s mental illness, grotesque mental disfigurement all the way down in this administration.
Recently, the U.S. attorney in New Jersey (Trump’s former personal attorney Alina Habba) launched an investigation into the state of New Jersey for its alleged “obstruction” of Trump’s deportation agenda.
Alina Habba is a federal prosecutor now?
Alina Habba who said, “Somebody said to me ‘Alina, would you rather be smart or pretty?’ and I said ‘Oh easy, pretty… I can fake being smart’."?
Alina Habba, who has never been a prosecutor before? That Alina Habba is now the chief federal prosecutor and law enforcement official in New Jersey?
The one in Trump’s losing $500 million civil fraud case who didn’t even seem to know the federal rules of evidence, and whose only skill at the trial seemed to be completely undermining herself and her case?
Jesus christ.
Don Jr.: What am I good at? Let’s see… Going to clubs. Being around powerful people. Collecting money for doing nothing.
But what if I could combine them all?
Trump’s advisor situation has gone from yes-men to North Korean sycophant fairy tale land. If those around him saw he thought it really said “MS13” then I doubt anyone said a word, and instead probably just fed into it.

Any prosecutions should fail because there is no mens rea (intent) which is a requirement under criminal law (until the judicial branch is fully captured). The purpose right now is to send a signal that they are above the law and chill anyone attempting to stop them.
From their About page, it’s always fascinating to read how much dogwhistle coded language they put in there to make sure you know this site isn’t run by or for those people:
For far too long, American consumers and business owners who cherish family values

they have lacked an economic ecosystem that truly aligns with their priorities.
The globalist economy isn’t hateful enough to the things we hate, this makes us sad because we really want to feel aligned.
It’s time to embrace this community of customers and merchants by providing platforms, products, and services that enrich the way of life they hold dear.
We needed to very carefully adapt “way of life” from David Duke so people know we mostly almost completely don’t 100% mean the white christian way of life. Well, let’s just make sure we add extra photos of only white babies on the site so people get the message. Nailed it.
But Trump promised* he wouldn’t!
*Not promised, but strongly implied.†
†By strongly implied, meaning “at least left open the possibility.”††
††Except for the times he said the opposite thing.†††
†††This was every time.
The CFPB people he cut were saving citizens - i.e. the very taxpayers Musk claims to represent without a mandate of any kind - $21 billion already.
He was selling our dollars for pennies.
Having a cabinet of Trump loyalists whose only move is to double down is somehow not giving us an agile, effective government, huh? Gosh, this is so surprising.
Yep, it would be ceding habeas corpus. It would effectively agree that anyone secretly kidnapped out of the country and handed to another authoritarian state was a totally legal and cool end run around the Constitution.
If the Supreme Court agrees to this, it’s knocking a pretty huge block of the foundation out of our democracy.
Gee, it’s almost like bad things happen when you don’t give people a hearing, due process, or investigate allegations.
Trump, Miller, Noem and the ICE bootlickers are so drunk with unchecked power. They have qualified immunity to civil liability but they are not immune to criminal violations. And they are in fact acting criminally by unlawfully restraining people including US citizens, and refusing to recognize established constitutional rights.
So what is left to do? Arrest the ICE members is what needs to happen. Normally, the DOJ would punish those who violate criminal and constitutional laws, but Bondi does not and has never intended to defend the Constitution or prosecute ICE. The US Attorneys are nearly all replaced. Local law enforcement has the same authoritarian sympathies and have almost universally ended up helping ICE. I suppose the last line of defense is citizen’s arrest. But Bondi will certainly make examples of regular people if they try to arrest ICE members.
Realistically, what’s left?
