I use Remote Desktop it a lot, and was warned about the changing name beforehand. And yet when one day the old application disappeared from my dock, I had the same reaction. I thought company IT or a macOS update might’ve screwed me over.

I’m used to it now, but that was a strange day.

And vice versa, you don’t need to know how to centre a div to create a game in assembler. I’m comfortable using pointers and managing memory, but don’t ask me to do anything with web UI.

There is a paper titled “What Every Computer Scientist Should Know About Floating-Point Arithmetic” by David Goldberg. It’s a bit theoretical, but IMO it’s a must-read for any programmer doing more than the occasional floating point calculation. It goes beyond just limited precision and rounding errors.

Randall Munroe. You may know him from such gems as xkcd 3472 and 6548.

It’s also a very good introduction to programming, and just a good read. Probably the best book about programming I’ve ever read.

Hell: from macOS to WSL.

To me at least, the EA App (despite its lame name) is better than Origin ever was. I know that’s not saying much, but there it is. It’s more stable and has a better layout.

I just wish they’d stop thinking I “play The Sims” just because I tried a demo 5 years ago and decided it wasn’t for me.

Not a perfect analogy, but it fits. 11 is literally 10 with a higher build number and a different shell. The same relation exists between 2000 and XP.

The problem is that the shell is what people interact with, and what they equate “Windows” with. Which is understandable and to some extent even correct.

I also think there’s a fair amount of memory bias. People complained about every new Windows version.

It is important to know that these are books for computer scientists more than for software engineers. They are basically mathematics textbooks, about the mathematics of algorithms. They focus on proving theorems rather than implementing useful algorithms.

There is a book called concrete mathematics that is sort of an introduction to TAOCP. If you’re interested in the basics that may be a good place to start. It has a better title than TAOCP in that it explicitly mentions mathematics, but also an equally bad one because it’s very much theoretical rather than concrete.

I wish they would ban me. I haven’t logged in in over 15 years and even block several of their servers, and yet I still get mails that someone in there commented on something.

I gave up on Google over a decade ago - maybe two decades by now. Way back when I was using Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, Astalavista, and others. When Google came, it somehow beat them all at finding exactly what I was looking for.

Later they stopped searching for the exact words you typed, but it was okay because adding a plus in front of terms, or quotes around phrases, still let you search exact things. The combination of both systems was very powerful.

And then plus and quotes stopped working. Boolean operators stopped working. Their documentation still says they work, but they don’t.

Now, it seems like your input is used only as a general guideline to pick whatever popular search is closest to what it thinks you meant. Exact words you typed are often nowhere in the page, not even in the source.

I only search Google maps now, and occasionally Google translate.

I’m still enjoying Mass Effect Andromeda. The combat is a bit too action-oriented - I miss the tactics and strategy of other RPGs. But it’s not so bad that it detracts from the game’s enjoyment.

I’ve also (re)started Baldur’s Gate 1 (enhanced edition). I’m not far in yet but I can already tell it’s going to be hard picking only 5 companions. They’re all so interesting.

Our code base is filled with “//constructor”, “//destructor”, “//assignment”, or the ever enlightening “Foo GetFoo(); // GetFoo”.

This is not what they mean by self-documenting code.
