Trump’s comments came at a rally in Ohio in the context of auto manufacturing. The Biden campaign responded by criticizing the former president’s “threats of political violence.”

Former President Donald Trump vowed on Saturday that there would be a “bloodbath” if he’s not reelected in November.

The comments came at a rally here as Trump discussed the possibility of an increasing trade war with China over auto manufacturing. The rally was intended to get out the vote for Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, whom Trump endorsed in December, ahead of Ohio’s primary on Tuesday.

Later, he added, “If this election isn’t won, I’m not sure that you’ll ever have another election in this country.”

We have literally seen this happen already. It’s maddening that there’s no mention of January 6th in relation to this latest comment. Or at every possible chance to do so.

    Whole quote:

“If you’re listening, President Xi — and you and I are friends — but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now…you’re going to not hire Americans and you’re going to sell the cars to us, no. We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.”

"Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars. They’re building massive factories.”

“If this election isn’t won, I’m not sure that you’ll ever have another election in this country.”

“Biden’s policies will create an economic bloodbath for the auto industry and auto workers.”

Huh, that title definitely takes it out of context. Don’t get me wrong, a violent bloodbath is absolutely his plan, but this quote seems to be more about an economic bloodbath

Trying to interpret his actual intent is pointless. That’s why his base likes him, he talks in circles, and you can attribute whatever meaning you want to it.

But if we’re going by his actual words, he’s saying that there will be a blood bath if he’s not elected, and that the tariff is the least of the trouble that’s going to happen when he takes power.

But his words and mid sentence topic changes can lead you to literally any conclusion.

This is the key thing to bear in mind. While the context does seem somewhat legit, it’s really framed in a way that can give several different messages, which is how he always talks - peppering in vitriolic soundbites amid a word salad of talking points. And it’s clear the part his supporters latch onto is the jingoistic core found in everything he says.

They have no fucking clue what tariffs are.

the headline is out of pocket but the idea there will be an “economic bloodbath” if auto manufacturing opens in mexico is insane. This moron negotiated nafta 2.0 and he can’t even own up to the fact the only thing he got was a sweetheart deal for facebook out of it.

Not what out of pocket means, out of pocket means that you will be personally covering expenditures

e.g. “I broke the company monitor so I will be coming out of pocket to replace it”

Actually now that I think about it, your usage comes from the AAVE usage so it’s valid. Whoops

For saying, to Xi, that the 100% tariffs Trump will put on the cars he (Xi) builds in Mexico will be an economic bloodbath, because nobody in America, the intended audience, will buy the cars?

MSNBC is doing a great job making people look dumb.

Please, my fellow democrats, I beg that we pick our battles better. This was said in a context that pretty clearly was referencing the impact of a trade war with China. He was talking about car manufacturing in Mexico and tariffs and how it will impact the American economy. There are plenty of quotes where the dog whistle is clear as day. This is not the right example to use when having this argument

You say context I say he is using terms in a way that can be understood either way so that he gets a free pass for telling his followers that are constantly told the country is being lost or overruns and they are being attacked that there will be a bloodbath.

Stop giving them the benefit of the doubt.

You are missing the point. I am NOT saying that he isn’t using a dog whistle here. I am NOT saying this isn’t extremely thinly veiled threats. I am NOT giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I am saying that this particular instance is a weak example by comparison to some of the far worse things he has said, and headlines that deliberately exclude context to make it sound worse than it would with the full quote do more harm than good. I am saying that it distracts from the much more easily defensible criticisms, by inviting pedantic arguments and cries of unfairness.

You are literally the person I’m trying to communicate with: Stop making it easy for people to derail the conversation. Stop making it easy for moderates to buy into the “democrats are manipulative too” song and dance. Please. It does us no good

His followers are going to remember the line out of context, and he knows it.

Stop giving him excuses for inciting violence because it was in a word salad. That shit builds up and is why we are where we are at today.

For real, maybe two of the 60+ comments at this time reference the content of the article. The rest reference the sensationalized and wildly out of context headline. Articles like this are perfect for the Trump base to latch onto to say look, Demos spreading propaganda, because that’s all it is.

This may be just the kind of response we need to bring about a sort of reform that prevents any MAGA style dictatorship in the present or future, but I can’t help but worry about the gun-nut trump lovers that will go out and murder anyone they think is a democrat if this happens.
