The president was asked by a reporter on Wednesday if he had spoken with Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, about the tariffs that have sparked a potentially costly trade war between the countries, and have led to predictions of empty shelves before the end of the year as imports dry up.

Trump said he had not, and offered his own prediction as to how Christmas might look for American families.

“Somebody said, ‘Oh, the shelves are gonna be open.’ Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,” he said.

the thing I think a lot of “linux dorks” (and I use that term lovingly) forget about is that most people want to work on their computer, not work on their computer. The OS, for most people, should be the software equivalent of a motherboard – an invisible plinth upon which the actual things you care about sit. With a motherboard, that’s your GPU, CPU, RAM, etc. and with the OS, that’s the applications you run.

there’s nothing wrong with making fiddling with your computer a hobby, and I’ve been known to dabble myself over the years, but for me and most other normal people, that ends up being too much work for too little reward in the end. Mint getting to the point where you can daily drive it and not have to worry about it even if you’re a complete brainlet when it comes to Linux is a massive W.

Right? I’ve been running Mint the past year, can count the amount of times I had to boot into windows on my fingers, and having to use the terminal to do things is like an occasional, once every couple months thing, usually to solve a problem I’ve created for myself.

I remember trying Linux in the early 2010s. When it looked like a modern OS, but behaved like it always had up to that point. That was misery.

also anyone who complains about the terminal in Linux is clearly not very computer competent in Windows, as I recall frequently using Command Prompt and PowerShell to get shit done. At least, they’re not doing anything remotely complex if they’ve never encountered or had to use either.

the entire reason I switched to Linux – back in January I asked myself “if I have to fight my operating system to make it work right for me anyways, why pay for the privilege?”

like sure updates break things on Linux too occasionally but at least they don’t reinstall spyware I had to spend a day ripping out after the last update.

I’ve had no significant driver issues with Mint and a 2080, myself. I switched back in February, and most things – games included – just work. The few that didn’t, were easy to fix with some searching on stackoverflow and reddit (about the only thing that site is good for now).

I usually hook my Steam Deck up to my TV via a USB hub and HDMI, and then fire something up on Plex, which I keep running on my desktop.

Bonus: Make it a wireless HDMI dongle (which I’m too cheap for but are a thing), and now using it from the couch is even more convenient.

And then nobody ever made another emulator for Nintendo products again and this definitely does not foreshadow an endless game of whack-a-mole powered by spite.
