JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.
It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.
Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.
Oh hahahaha, now watch as you have the lowest WC attendance in history and be the first modern WC to lose money.
I doubt FIFA is on the Republican take, and the event brings a bunch of brown people and Euros to town. Why would they care if it succeeds? If anything making it fail is part of their deliberate campaign of chaos.
I doubt FIFA is on the Republican take
Well that would be the first corrupt administration they didn’t jump in bed with at the first opportunity then.
Yeah, holding the world cup in dictatorships is kind of their thing.
At what point is it a fetish for them?
It’s just plain corruption, but I guess they get off on having lots of money?
As long as the cheque clears, they don’t care.
Countries like Qatar, Brazil want to host the games for the prestige and the affinity for the sport.
US Republicans don’t give a shit about “soccer.” Being the brilliant dealmakers they are, they probably want FIFA to pay them.
I doubt FIFA is on the Republican take
Clearly you know very little about FIFA in general and Trump’s buddy Infantino in particular…
Neither have ever seen a despotic government they didn’t want bribes from.
losing money on a sure thing would be totally on brand for donvict & co.
America will simply be the largest casino he’s bankrupted so far
Why people Talk about Casinos… He bankrupted Casinos but this destroyed the whole fucking City (anyway get my upvote)
I’m happy when my cell phone already writes the words I write and that’s already a frustrating act, if punctuation marks are added, the cell phone is in 1000 pieces on the wall.
Cities hosting the WC almost never recoup their investments. Sure, it’s a windfall for a select few, but it is a bad investment for everyone else.
I don’t know why
you’reyou were being downvoted, you’re absolutely right. As documented by an excellent Last Week Tonight segment and also another, FIFA and a select few rich people and corporations profiting off of lucrative contracts snatch up all the income and leave everyone else with all the expenses.
I don’t know why
you’reyou were being downvoted, you’re absolutely right.I think you just answered your own question. :)
They hope for tourist. So do the math. Carefully… you must using MAGA math xD
Ticket sales are already going so badly that they’re CHEAPER on the secondhand market! Scalpers are taking a loss to get rid of them, which is pretty much unheard of for an event like a world cup.
People are even more wary of traveling to Trump’s US than to the Emir’s Qatar or Putin’s Russia.
Wait, are tickets for the 2026 World Cup already on sale?
How does the world cup define losing money? Because the absolute devastation that the world cup leaves in it’s wake to already poor and impoverished populations is definitely not being calculated. The human cost of labor exploitation alone is awful. But I guess that’s what they mean by “profitable” anyway.
That’s for host countries that have to build stadiums. WC2026 is going to use existing stadiums in the US, Canada and Mexico, just like WC1994 the last time in the US. Not every WC is like Qatar that had to build all new stadiums for all the venues. It’s always preferable that a host country already has capable stadiums like WC2014 in Brazil or WC2006 in Germany.
Genuine question, don’t almost all countries lose money when they host the World Cup?
FIFA literally keeps all ticket sales and broadcasting money. Your only hope is to entice more visitors in the future or be an European country that already has stadiums literally everywhere.
Genuine question, don’t almost all countries lose money when they host the World Cup?
No, they don’t. A lot of money is generated from the attendance via hotel bookings, restaurant meals, alcohol sales, day excursions, VAT taxes, etc. For the tourism industry it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.
I’ve been to over 50 countries in all seven continents, and I’ve lived in four of those. Never did I feel anything that I would would describe as fear.
I will be travelling to the US for an exchange program next month. I am afraid. To the point I am actually considering cancelling what could be a career changing opportunity.
Is the opportunity “once in a lifetime” or can you find alternatives like Europe? Tbh things are too fucked up now, even I am afraid to travel there a few weeks to visit.
My feelings are your feelings… but I am not planning on traveling to the US.
I am in the US, and I despise what’s going on. So please do not take what I am about to say as a defense to what is happening here.
Things are pretty extreme right now, but they aren’t as bad as the extreme left media is making it out to be. I find news articles posted on Lemmy are often sensationalized. There are 100% things we need to worry about, and things I myself am fighting (most everything the orange man does). But I do not think it is so bad you should cancel a big opportunity for yourself. Obviously things are happening to people, but most people are traveling to and from the US without any issues. You aren’t going to hear reports about all the people who didn’t have any issues while traveling.
I do not think there is reason to believe anything would happen to you. The right doesn’t want you here, so they absolutely aren’t going to keep you here as a prisoner. If they wanted you out, you would gladly leave on your own accord and cover all the expenses. They wouldn’t spend more money making you leave if you don’t want to be here anyway.
extreme left media
Where is this mythical entity? I’d like to subscribe.
You should be concerned, the US government will change your job title to El Salvadorian Detainee whether you want them to or not.
I would consider canceling any dealings with US if said person isn’t white, even that is a stretch for this dogshit administration. I hope we see a general protest by making the World Cup barren.
As a sane person I am deeply sorry for any strife our government causes. Do your best to stay safe!
Been to Canada and Mexico.
Flew over that shithole but that’s as close I want to come to that awful country, no matter who’s in charge.
I’ve heard plenty horrible stories from people I know who got treated badly by their gestapo cops and border goons.Everyone, go to the world cup to beat up ICE and throw them in a prison where they can’t leave.
A better tomorrow
Who the fuck thought it’d be a good idea to hold the world cup in the US, a country that doesn’t even give a fuck about football?
The same people who thought Qatar was a good host
Just Dumb does not joke around.
Haha human rights violations are hilarious
This guy can’t even pretend to be a normal person.
He is the embodiment of mommy issues.
Dorothy Mantooth was a saint!
At this rate, they’re gonna be deporting the prime minister of Canada, the pope, and king of England, when they visit in 2026
Or worse, meet face to face with JD Vance and die of cringe the next day.
At this rate, they’ll deport the players. Is it too late to move the 2026 world cup?
I can 100% guarantee at least one athlete is going to be refused entry.
World cup includes tiny nations with players that are closer to your local plumber who plays on the weekends than to Christiano Ronaldo flying in on a private jet. Think Trinidad&Tobago and etc. Would definitely not be surprised when some of them get deported when stepping out of their regular flights.
I expect to see star players deported right before matches against the US team.
And today in our “How to kill tourism in your country for one of the biggest worldwide events” class, we examine JD Vance and his idiotic comments about the world cup.
I would not take such words as “jokes” anymore. I take them as an open and dire warning not to travel to the US until the government has been taken care of.
For real. I’m not risking losing thousands of Euros on flights because some CBP asshole on a power trip denies me entry. Not to mention the very real possibility to be held at some kind of detention facility
Just heard it on the radio that student exchanges with the US are failing; First, because parents here are afraid what happens to non-citizens in the US, and second, because US parents are wary to have foreigners in their home (no because they are afraid of foreigners or kids, but of what the US “ICE” GeStaPo might do).
I would not take such words as “jokes” anymore.
Pretty much.
For anyone out of the loop: https://www.dw.com/en/german-nationals-us-immigration-detained-interrogation-ice-donald-trump/a-71987211
Real shame nobody smothered him to death in his bassinet
When you find “funny” how mean you can be to someone, you’re just making sure everyone knows you’re a fucking loser
You gonna deport the athletes too?
I bet they’ll do this to the ones who have a chance of beating American athletes.
That’s most of them.
Guaranteed this happens to at least one athlete. That many non-whites coming in for a work trip? Someone is going to get arrested.
Yeah, whilst calling them illegal migrants stealing “the good working people of americas” jobs
Can the participating countries boycott the matches in that is held within the US?
Why should those countries be punished?
Exclude US and have them in Mx and Canada.
Or to piss them off more let Cuba and Venezuela hold some matchesThey never do. Hell, they all went to Qatar. Fifa is a system genuinely built on corruption. And although corruption is money-driven most of the time, it‘s most notably a corruption of minds and souls.
And many of these football players live in a bubble. They have no fucking idea what’s happening outside of their football world.
We blew all the goodwill we earned for taking down Sepp Blatter, damn near immediately.
